MOSCOW, December 21 / Radio Sputnik. The newest Russian transport and combat helicopter Mi-8AMTSh-VN has successfully tested guided missile firing and confirmed the status of a flying airborne assault vehicle (BMD), RIA Novosti reported, citing a source in the military-industrial complex.
"The prototype Mi-8AMTSh-VN in recent tests fired guided missiles of the Ataka-VM complex at targets imitating enemy armored vehicles. The firing was recognized as successful," the source said.
He clarified that the helicopter also used unguided rockets and cannons in overhead containers.
"In fact, it has confirmed its characteristics as an airborne assault vehicle," the source said.
The Ministry of Defense reported that the first ten Mi-8AMTSh-VN will receive army aviation brigades.
The Mi-8AMTSh-VN helicopter has an updated armament. The main feature was the use of special suspension on farms of two course machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber.
The helicopter is also equipped with new flight and navigation equipment. To increase the combat survivability, the principle of a combination of a "glass cockpit" and reliable analog instruments was applied.
The cockpit and the main components of the helicopter are protected by new titanium alloy armor. To protect personnel, the floor of the cargo compartment, as well as the sides of the helicopter, are covered with removable lightweight Kevlar armor to the level of the windows.
Earlier it was reported that the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation will receive the first batch of ten newest Mi-8AMTSh-VN helicopters for special purposes in 2020-2021.
Earlier, Sputnik radio reported that the ships of the Russian Navy will take part in exercises with ships of NATO countries.
