Nigeria considers buying more fighter planes, artillery, others from Russia

August 24, 2017Agency Report

Nigeria is considering purchasing Russian military equipment and is particularly interested in MiG fighters, Yak-130 aircraft, artillery equipment and armoured vehicles, Defence Minister Mansur Dan-Ali told Sputnik on Thursday.

“The Russian equipment that could be of our interest are MiG fighters and some artillery equipment.

“We are here [at International Army Games-2017] to have a look. We have identified some items, like the Kalashnikov modern, new rifles and also avionics, helicopters and some other mine-resistant protected vehicles.

“We also looked at the [Yak-] 130 jet and also we are thinking how to go about it. We just had a look and now when we go back home we look at some of its specifications before we sit down for negotiations,” Mr. Dan-Ali said.

Speaking about military supplies from Russia, the minister mentioned the ongoing deliveries of Russian helicopters to the African nation within the framework of the 2016 agreement.

“Basically, we have gone for Mi-35 helicopters last year. We have taken two already and are expecting to get another two, early next year.

“All in all, we have about 12 of them,” the minister said.

He also said Nigeria is planning to take part in the 2018 International Army Games.

“We shall participate in the International Army Games. As I have said earlier, this agreement that we have just signed entails closer cooperation between the two states.

“We are looking at exchange programs, training and exercises. Since 2006, we have been pushing for it in order to facilitate training of personnel and exchanges of ideas between our two militaries,” the minister said.

On Tuesday, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu met with Mr. Dan-Ali on the sidelines of the 2017 International Army Games and invited the Nigerian side to participate in the game next year.

On the same day, the two countries signed an intergovernmental agreement on military cooperation. According to Mr. Shoigu, the two states would, in particular, focus on joint training of troops, exchange of peacekeeping experience, as well as combating piracy and terrorism.

The two countries have a long history of cooperation, including in the military field.

In September 2016, Russia and Nigeria reached an agreement on the delivery of Mi-35M attack helicopters.

In June 2017, the Nigerian defence minister said that Russia could supply Nigeria with weapons to back it in the struggle against the Boko Haram terrorist group.

The International Army Games is an annual military competition held since 2015.

Within the framework of the international event, servicemen from different countries compete in different military disciplines.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry’s website, the 2017 games were held in Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Kazakhstan and Russia, while the programme of the event comprised 28 different contests.

Army-2017: Tractor Plants modernises BMD-4M

Nikolai Novichkov - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
23 August 2017

Russia's Tractor Plants Concern has showcased the BMD-4M airborne infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) upgraded with the new Sinitsa (Titmouse) combat compartment at the Army-2017 international military-technical exhibition held outside Moscow from 22–27 August.

The Sinitsa is essentially a modernised BMP-3 IFV combat module modified to fit the BMD-4M. It has retained the powerful armament suite of the basic model, comprising a 100 mm 2A70 gun/launcher, with 40 high-explosive fragmentation rounds (including 22 stored in the autoloader) and four anti-tank guided missiles (including three in the autoloader); a 30 mm 2A72 automatic cannon with an ammunition load of 500 rounds; and a 7.62 PKTM medium machine gun with an ammunition load of 2,000 rounds.

The modernised BMD-4M is designed to transport airborne troops and to conduct fire support. The vehicle is equipped with an automated digital round-the-clock jamming-resistant fire-control system with an automatic target tracking device. The BMD-4M’s chassis has received a digital management device.

Bell targets military market with 525 helicopter

Bell Helicopter is pitching the in-development 525 Relentless to military customers as a 20-passenger troop transport or search and rescue (SAR) platform.

Although Bell has previously identified civil SAR and VIP transport missions as alternatives to the depressed oil and gas segment it initially aimed the 525 at, the airframer has so far not pursued military customers.

However, Larry Thimmesch, vice-president of 525 sales and business development, says the Relentless is ideal for utility missions.......Read rest of article: Here

Design and development

The Bell 525 is being developed to meet a requirement for a medium-lift helicopter. It will be constructed primarily from composites and metal and is to be the first commercial helicopter to incorporate fly-by-wire flight controls, with tactile cues. The system is triple redundant, and is developed in two simulator environments. The 525 will be powered by a pair of GE CT7-2F1 turboshaft engines, with a new composite five-blade main rotor system. The cost of the 525 has not yet been determined, but it is expected to be cost competitive on missions between 50 and 400 nmi, performed by helicopters such as the AgustaWestland AW139 and Sikorsky S-92.

The Bell 525 is designed to fit the emerging "Super-Medium" size category suited ideally to support offshore oil and gas operations, with 50% of the customers coming from that sector. Helicopters under development in the same class are the Airbus Helicopters H175 and the AgustaWestland AW189. The Bell 525's maiden flight was planned for late 2014. PHI, Inc. is the launch customer for the type.

After a six-month delay, the Bell 525 made its first flight on July 1, 2015. Bell expects certification in 2017. The FAA suggested special rules in May 2016. On July 6, 2016, a Bell 525 crashed during a test flight, killing both occupants. The aircraft broke up in flight while travelling about 229 mph at an altitude of about 2,000 feet. The crash delayed certification from 2017 to 2018. Source: wikiwand.com
