Safran, UEC To Develop Modification Engine For Be-200 Amphibious Aircraft


French Safran and Russian United Engine Corporation (UEC) have signed an agreement for the development of the modification of SaM146 engine for the version of Russian multi-purpose amphibious aircraft, Beriev Be-200.

‘ODK-Saturn’, a part of UEC and Safran signed the framework agreement during the recently concluded St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, UEC said in a statement last Friday.

SaM146- an integrated power plant includes a turbofan engine and a nacelle (housing, separate from the fuselage, which holds engines, fuel, or equipment on an aircraft) with a reversing device. It is produced by ODK-Saturn under the terms of an equitable partnership with Safran for equipping the Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger aircraft. The engine and after-sales services are provided by PowerJet (a joint venture between Safran and UDK-Saturn).

ODK-Saturn and Safran Aircraft Engines agreed to carry out modernization (including a major revision of the digital automatic control system software) of the SaM146 engine in service to integrate it with the Be-200 aircraft and further certification of the re-motorized version. A three-year "road map" for the creation of three prototypes, designed for testing and certification was formed.

The Russian Ministry of Defense concluded agreements with enterprises to the tune of over 135 bln rubles ($1.98 bln), and they will be extended over the coming eight years (2018-2026). During this period, the military plans to receive two Sukhoi Su-57 jet fighters, six Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-2 fighters, 132 BMD-4M combat vehicles, 58 BTR-MDM armored vehicles, 69 Typhoon (4x4) vehicles, and repair more than 1,000 Kamaz and Ural vehicles, Kommersant wrote. In turn, the fleet will receive a series of six small missile ships of the Project 22800, which will become carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles that were successfully tested in Syria.

The signing of 32 contracts was held at Patriot Park with Deputy Defense Minister Alexey Krivoruchko attending the event. According to him, with the timely implementation of these deals, the armed forces will receive more than 600 new units, as well as over 1,500 items of repaired weapons, military and special equipment. The execution cycle of most contracts is limited to the period of 2018-2020. A source in the Ministry told Kommersant, this was chiefly due to the practice of approving a three-year budget.

Turkey has successfully test fired Smart Micro Munition (MAM-L) from an Anka-S unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) controlled by satellite, the Directorate for Turkish Defence Industries (SSB) announced on 17 August.

MAM-L munition, produced by Roketsan, has a range of 8–14 km.

Six Anka-S UAVs have been delivered to the Turkish Air Force Command, with four more planned by the end of 2018.

WASHINGTON — Officials from the Russian defense firm Kronshtadt Group announced the possible sale of the company’s Orion UAV to a country in the Middle East. But which Middle Eastern country is purchasing the platform, and what capabilities does the system bring to bear?

The Orion-E (export version) is Russia’s medium-altitude, long-endurance drone with a reported range of 250 kilometers, a total flight duration of about 24 hours and a maximum altitude of 8,000 meters. While originally designed for only intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, Russia has announced a combat version that can carry up to 200 kilograms of cargo, which will also be available for export.

The Orion “most closely resembles America’s Predator/Gray Eagle UAV in its technical characteristics,” according to Samuel Bendett, an expert on Russian military robotics.

The Chinese model that most resembles the Orion’s capabilities is the Wing Loong.

According to Russian sources, Bendett said, “the two countries most likely to acquire [the Orion] are Syria and Egypt. Syria and Russia already enjoy a very close mil-to-mil relationship, while Egypt is diversifying its military imports from reliance on U.S. and occasional Chinese technologies.”

But there are other potential buyers, Bendett notes. “[The United Arab Emirates] has imported Russian military technology before, and Russia recently announced closer cooperation with Lebanon. Iraq, which has imported Chinese UAVs, has also started to import more Russian military equipment,” he said.

“Russia is keen to win new UAV markets but realizes it has an uphill climb against American, Israeli and Chinese UAVs in the short- to mid-range sector,” Bendett added.

China in particular is a fierce competitor in the Middle East UAV market. As the U.S. Defense Department noted in its annual report to Congress on Chinese military and security developments, “the Middle East and North Africa region was China’s second largest regional arms market, probably because of the demand for armed UAVs — a niche area where China is one of the few suppliers.”

“China has sold armed UAVs to several states in the Middle East and North Africa, including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. China faces little competition for sale of such systems, as most countries who produce them are restricted in selling the technology as signatories of the Missile Technology Control Regime,” among other export control agreements, the report said.

MOSCOW, August 19. /TASS/. The upgraded heavy Mi-26T2V helicopter developed for the Russian aerospace forces has made its maiden flight, the press service of Russian Helicopters Co. said on Sunday.

"The modernized Mi-26T2V helicopter developed for the Russian aerospace forces performed a maiden flight at a flight test center of Russian Helicopters’ (incorporated into Rostec state corporation) Rosvertol company," the press service said.

The prototype rotorcraft, manufactured by Rosvertol, will soon fly to the Moscow region to take part in the 2018 Army forum, where it will be put on display, the press service added.

"The state armaments program for 2018-2027 provides for supplying this type of heavy helicopters to the army," Russian Helicopters cited Anatoly Serdyukov, industrial director of Rostec’s aviation cluster, as saying.

"I am sure the Mi-26T2 will be in high demand not only in Russia, but also in foreign countries. We see potential on the Asian, African and Middle East markets," he said.

Preliminary flight tests will start after the 2018 Army exhibition. State trials will follow.

"The successful completion of the maiden flight proves that the technical solutions used during the upgrading of the Mi-26 helicopter in the interests of the Russian defense ministry were right. We have managed to lower considerably the burden on the crew by means of automating the takeoff and landing procedures. Apart from that, the helicopter’s survivability has been increased thanks to a state-of-the-art onboard defense," said Andrei Boginsky, Director General of Russian Helicopters.

The upgraded Mi-26T2V helicopter will have a lifting capacity of 20 tonnes. The helicopter will be fitted out with modern NPK90-2 integrated onboard radio-electronic equipment and also with an onboard defensive aids system to protect the helicopter against missiles of various homing types. Mi-26T2V is meant for airlifting equipment, large size cargoes and paratroops.

The Mi-26T2V will be able to perform missions even in regions with complex physical and geographic features and unfavorable climatic conditions day and night over featureless terrain amid enemy counter-fire and information counter-measures.

The Russian armed forces are receiving the new 2B25 82 mm silenced mortars developed by the Burevestnik institute of Rostec`s Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) corporation, a military source told Jane’s at the Army 2018 defence show being held in Kubinka near Moscow from 21-26 August.

“The Ministry of Defence [MoD] is acquiring new towed and man-portable mortars for the land troops. In particular, the special forces are slated for receiving several dozen 2B25 silenced mortars,” the source said. “The 2B25’s noise level does not exceed that of a Kalashnikov AKMB assault rifle fitted with the PBS-1 silencer. The mortar produces almost no muzzle flash or smoke.”

The 2B25 weighs approximately 13 kg and can be transported in a single backpack by the operator. The mortar’s baseline ammunition comprises four 3VO35 82 mm high-explosive fragmentation (HE-Frag) mortar shells that are carried in another backpack by the loader.

The 2B25 has a maximum rate of fire of 15 rounds per minute and a combat readiness time of no more than 30 seconds. Its elevation angle varies between 45° and 85°.

“Owing to the use of steel balls as fragments, the effectiveness of the 3VO35 is almost equal to that of the 3VO26 HE-Frag 82 mm mortar shell, which is used by the 2B24 towed mortar,” the source said. The 3V035 round weighs 3.3 kg, including a 1.9 kg warhead, and has a muzzle velocity of 122 m/s.

In the baseline configuration, the 2B25 is fitted with the MPM-44M panoramic mortar sight.

Burevestnik is also developing new silenced mortars with an extended firing range. “Two variants are being considered: an extended-range 60 mm mortar with a range of up to 4 km and a combat weight of approximately 18 kg, and a lighter 60 mm mortar with a 2.5-3 km range and a weight of no more than 12 kg,” the source said.
