Saudi Arabia to buy defence systems, other arms from Russia

Preliminary agreements signed to buy S-400 air defence systems and receive 'cutting edge technologies' from Russia

Thu 05 Oct 2017 06:57 PM

Saudi Arabia signed on Thursday preliminary agreements to buy S-400 air defence systems and receive "cutting edge technologies" from Russia during King Salman's landmark visit to Moscow, the Saudi military industries firm said.

The agreement was announced as King Salman, who is on the first official trip to Russia by a Saudi monarch, and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks at the Kremlin.

Under the agreements, Saudi Arabia is set to buy S-400 air defence systems, Kornet anti-tank guided missile systems and multiple rocket launchers.

These agreements are "expected to play a pivotal role in the growth and development of the military and military systems industry in Saudi Arabia," Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI), the Sunni state's military industries firm said.

"The memorandum of understanding includes the transfer of technology for the local production" of the Kornet anti-tank guided missile systems, advanced multiple rocket launchers and automatic grenade launchers.

"In addition, the parties will cooperate in setting a plan to localise the manufacturing and sustainment of parts of the S-400 air defence system," SAMI said.

The two countries also agreed on the production in Saudi Arabia of the Kalashnikov automatic rifle and its ammunition as well as educational and training programmes for Saudi nationals.

"These agreements are expected to have tangible economic contributions and create hundreds of direct jobs," the company said.

They "will also transfer cutting edge technologies that will act as a catalyst for localising 50 percent of the Kingdom’s military spending."

Rosoboronexport, Russia's state-owned arms exporter, had no immediate comment on the agreements.

The relevant contract may be signed by the yearend, if the negotiations are successful, the source said

MOSCOW, October 3. /TASS/. The United Arab Emirates wants to buy over a squadron of Sukhoi Su-35 advanced fighter jets from Russia and the contract may be signed by the yearend, a source in the system of military and technical cooperation told TASS on Tuesday.

"They want a lot, over a squadron but the exact number will be specified in the course of negotiations that may be held in November during an air show in Dubai," the source said.

The relevant contract may be signed by the yearend, if the negotiations are successful, the source said.

TASS does not yet have an official confirmation of this information.

A squadron is a tactical Air Force unit, which consists of formations and wings and also comprises aircraft maintenance personnel. A fighter aviation squadron in the Russian Air Force normally comprises 12 aircraft but their exact number depends on the type of an aviation regiment.

The Su-35 is a Russian-made multipurpose generation 4++ super-maneuverable fighter jet equipped with a phased array radar and steerable thrusters. It can develop a speed of up to 2,500 kilometers per hour and has a flying range of 3,400 kilometers and a combat radius close to 1,600 kilometers. The fighter jet is armed with a 30mm gun and has 12 hardpoints for carrying bombs and missiles.

Taiwan completes final operational test of Wan Chien air launched cruise missile

Image - From the net

Taiwan has completed the final operational test of its indigenous Wan Chien air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) on Sept. 25.

After being released from a AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-kuo fighter jet, commonly known as the Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF), the missile flew for 80 minutes and circled off Pingtun for 200km.

The Wan Chien is a 3.5 m long aircraft launched subsonic cruise missile produced by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). The conventionally armed weapon resembles the MBDA SCALP/Storm Shadow ALCM and the Raytheon AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW).

Powered by a turbojet engine, the Wan Chein (means Ten Thousands Swords in Chinese language) missile reportedly has a range of 240km.

The 650 kg missile is guided by INS/GPS and may have a terminal seeker. The payload is approximately 350 kg with either a high explosive, semi-armor piercing, or submunitions warhead. The submunitions warhead can reportedly be equipped with as many as 100 secondary bomblet warheads.

The missile is designed to enable the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) to conduct long-range suppression attacks against coastal inland military targets, whilst operating from the Taiwan Strait airspace.

Primarily intended to strike runways at enemy military airports, the Wan Chien missile is fired from a distance, which is adequate for attacking personnel to dodge defensive fire from the target locations.

Wan Chien air launched cruise missile

The Wan Chien is an air-to-ground, subsonic cruise missile developed by Taiwan. The missile program first came to light in 2005 and is currently operational in small numbers.

Development of the Wan Chien is believed to have started around 2000, led by Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). Taiwan reportedly began developing its own guided munitions after the United States – Taiwan’s main arms supplier – declined to sell it such systems. The program became known publicly in November 2005, and the missile entered service in 2011. Full production was expected to begin in 2015, but former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-Jeou chose to reduce the quantity to be produced. In June 2017, however, a Taiwanese report claimed that current President Tsai Ing-wen’s government had plans to restore production of the Wan Chien to above 100 weapons.
The missile was first publicly displayed on January 16, 2014 at a ceremony held at Tainan Air Base in Southern Taiwan.

The H175 offers excellent payload for short and long range missions, contributing to high annual productivity for operators. This combined with low operating and maintenance costs and high availability equals superior cost effectiveness for customers.

The H175 provides the best payload range-per-passenger/radius-of-action (RoA) in the medium helicopter category. In 2016, the H175 will have an extended maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 7,800 kilograms, offering an additional payload of 300 kilograms or an additional 40 nautical miles RoA.

With 16 passengers aboard in an oil and gas configuration, the H175 can fly to distances of 140 nautical miles, increasing to nearly 200 nautical miles when 12 passengers are carried, with no auxiliary fuel tank required. The helicopter can operate at its full payload in 90 percent of oil and gas operations.

Lighter than its competitors, the H175 is outfitted with a standard fuel tank that can carry more than 2 tons of fuel. This unmatched capacity is 30 percent more fuel than other aircraft in its class, without the need for an auxiliary fuel tank.

The cabin can be reconfigured for almost any mission, whether short or long-range. In search and rescue operations, the long endurance (6 hours), fast cruising speed (160 kts), long range and large cabin are key success factors.

Fewer flight hours required translates to less maintenance and lower costs.
