Russia's armed forces will receive a large number of 6S21 remote controlled weapon stations (RCWS) developed by the TsNII Burevestnik scientific-research institute, according to a source in the Russian defence industry.
"The military needs an organic RCWS armed with a machinegun or an automatic grenade launcher (AGL). In order to bridge the gap, Russia's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has ordered a large batch of 6S21 unmanned stations. 6S21 is supposed to become the organic RCWS of the armed forces in the near future. It has already been integrated with the newest Russian armour, such as Kurangets-25 and Bumerang armoured personnel carriers (APC). Burevestnik is also developing the marinised modification of 6S21," a source in the Russian defense industry told IHS Jane's at the Army 2016 defence show outside Moscow.
He added that Burevestnik has developed three variants of 6S21. "The 6S21-01 RCWS is armed with a 12.7 mm 6P49 Kord heavy machinegun, while the 6S21-02 and 6S21-03 [are both armed] with a 7.62 mm Kalashnikov PKTM machinegun. The 6S21-01 has an ammunition load of 200 12.7x108 mm cartridges, [while the] 6S21-02 and 6S21-03 have 500 and 320 7.62x54R mm cartridges, respectively. At the same time, the 6S21-01 lacks the thermal imager that is integrated with 6S21-02 and 6S21-03 unmanned stations," the source added.
