A delegation from the Indonesian
Ministry of Defence (MoD) has concluded a visit to Russia during which a
discussion to acquire Mi-26 helicopters for the Indonesian Army (Tentara
Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Darat: TNI-AD) was held.
The matter was disclosed to IHS
Jane's on 1 December by
sources from within the MoD, and corroborated with matching accounts from an
official at state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI).
Among matters that were discussed during the visit were defence
offsets, technology transfer arrangements, and how local Indonesian companies
could benefit from the acquisition should it proceeds.
IHS Jane's understands
that PTDI is being proposed as a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO)
facility for the Mi-26 platform, should the acquisition be approved by the
Indonesian government.

Mi-26 T2
It's a deeply modernized version
of Mi-26. It has a new cockpit with 5 LCD multiple function monitors which
allowed the reduction of the crew members from 5 to just 2.
It is equipped with a new digital auto-pilot system, a new
navigational system (NAVSTAR/ GLOSNASS), a TCAS, a ground proximity warning system and
carries the projector Tranzas
TSL-1600 on the right side off its fore section. Besides operating as a simple
illuminator, it can also serve as an IR light for use with the night vision
binoculars.
Mi-26T2 can transport various cargos up to 20,000 kg, on an external hook but also
internally. The military version can carry 82 paratroopers or 60 patients on stretchers.
The helicopter can easily carry out mission as firefighter,
