The United States asked Greece for permission to deploy F-35 and F-15 aircraft in Crete

Washington sent an official request to the Greek government for the deployment of F-35 and F-15 aircraft on the island of Crete , Turkish TV channel Ulusal Kanal reports .

As the journalists specified, Athens received a US request for work and is preparing a response. If the application is approved, the aircraft will be placed at the Suda base on the coast of the bay of the same name in Crete. Several military installations of the Greek army are located in this territory, as well as one of the main NATO strongholds in the region.

According to the channel, American aircraft will be able to participate in exercises in the Mediterranean.

In addition, Washington and Athens are discussing the issue of strengthening the defensive capabilities in the zone of the islands of Rhodes , Lesvos and Chios through NATO or US weapons. Greece expressed concern about the potential threat from Turkey and the growing tension in the Aegean.

According to experts, in exchange for strengthening the defense capability, the Greek side can transfer part of its old air defense systems and armored vehicles to the Ukrainian army.

Earlier, the administration of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded that Western countries provide Ankara with F-35 fighters and Patriot complexes without preconditions.
