Two Japanese F-15 fighters Saturday launched decoy flares at Chinese Air Force aircraft that were flying over the Miyako Strait for routine offshore training in western Pacific Ocean, China’s defense ministry said.

Spokesperson Yang Yujun said the Japanese Self-Defense Forces aircraft endangered the safety of the Chinese aircraft and their personnel. He added the Chinese pilot took quick measures and proceeded with the training.

The Miyako Strait is part of international waters, and the Chinese Air Force training is part of its annual plan which is not aimed at any particular country or target, and is consistent with international law and practices, Yang said.

He added Japan’s behavior was dangerous and unprofessional, and undermined the freedom of navigation and overflight guaranteed under international law.  China is gravely concerned by the incident and has made solemn representations, he explained.

Yang also said it's necessary to stress that in recent years, interference by Japanese ships have led to misunderstandings and misjudgments, as well as friction and conflict in the air and sea.

He urged Japan to value regional stability and bilateral ties, and take effective measures to prevent incidents that would threaten air and sea safety.

It was rare for Chinese defense ministry to announce such encounters between Chinese and Japanese air forces. Analysts said it is a signal that China wishes to address similar situations more proactively.

Miyako Strait

Seems the incident occurred in the overlapping ADZ claimed by both countries.
