China to import 36 Ka-52K Katran helicopters from Russia

September 17, 2021

The Chinese military delegation and the Russian arms export company signed a contract for naval aviation armaments at the Russian Army 2021 Technology Forum, which closed on the 28th of last month, and the Chinese side will import 36 Ka-52K Katran or Ka-52M heavy armed helicopters from Russia at a price of $20 million each, which will directly equip the Chinese Navy’s amphibious ships, according to Hong Kong Phoenix TV’s resident Russian correspondent Lu Yuguang today.

A Chinese military delegation has since visited the Progress Aviation Manufacturing Enterprise in Arsenyev, Russia. A Russian expert said the Ka-52 helicopter gunships have powerful external capabilities and the engines are among the world’s best, which will greatly strengthen the Chinese Navy’s capabilities in the South China Sea.

This news follows a rare double visit to the Ka-52 helicopter manufacturer by China’s CCTV and Phoenix TV last week, which has been credited with the signing of a large order for Ka-52 helicopters to equip China’s Type 075 aviation amphibious assault ships (LHD). It was reported that Type 075 LHD can accommodate up to 30 helicopter gunships, and allows six of them to take off simultaneously.

The Ka-52K Katran attack helicopter is a shipboard version of the basic Ka-52 helicopter gunship. Unlike the Ka-52, the Ka-52K is equipped with foldable main rotor blades as well as foldable short wings. The helicopter also has reinforced landing gear and can fire anti-ship missiles and a variety of other missiles and unguided air-launched weapons.

The Ka-52M, on the other hand, is the latest upgraded version of the Ka-52. The Ka-52M helicopter is equipped with more powerful heating elements on the main rotor blades that will allow this helicopter to fly in a variety of temperature environments, including the Arctic.  Ka-52M is equipped with more load-bearing and wear-resistant wheels, as well as additional equipment to defend against improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The cockpit of the Ka-52M helicopter has also been improved to be more in line with modern ergonomic requirements.

Defense Ministry may consider purchase of Checkmate fighter — deputy prime minister - Military & Defense - TASS

Yuri Borisov added that the plane possessed a number of features matching the parameters of fifth generation fighters, such as intra-fuselage hardpoints

TYUMEN, September 17. /TASS/. Russia’s Defense Ministry may consider the purchase of single-engine Checkmate fighters under a future state program for armaments, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov told the media on the sidelines of the Tyumen Oil and Gas Forum.

"Under a future state program for armaments the Defense Ministry and the Aerospace Force may consider the possibility of purchasing this fighter," Borisov said. "This is a major export potential factor. Foreign customers are always keen to know if the country’s national armed forces use the military technologies that are on offer for export."

Borisov said that both the Defense Ministry and the Aerospace Force had been "historically cautious" about single-engine fighters, because in their opinion twin-engine ones were more reliable. Nevertheless single-engine fighters are widely spread in the world.

"As far as I know, the beginning of flight tests is scheduled for 2023. Mass production (on the condition of sufficient demand) may begin in 2025-2026. This deadline is quite realistic," Borisov said. "Otherwise, we will be unable to enter this market where US and Chinese (single-engine) models already rule the roost. This plan has a very good potential and good prospects for taking a certain niche. Already now it has potential buyers. There are two essential yardsticks - prompt emergence on the market and a reasonable price - that will enable it to take a worthy place," he said.

Borisov added that the plane possessed a number of features matching the parameters of fifth generation fighters, such as intra-fuselage hardpoints.

Checkmate project

The fighter-jet Checkmate was for the first time presented at the MAKS air show last July. It is positioned as an alternative to the United States’ FA-35A Lightning II and Sweden’s JAS-39 Gripen. Checkmate’s potential market is estimated at 300 pieces. Alongside the domestic market the plane may be addressed to countries in Africa, India and Vietnam. The plane, likely to be indexed Sukhoi-75, will be assembled at a plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

Checkmate boasts stealth features and is equipped with an intra-fuselage compartment for air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles (a payload of over seven tonnes). The single-engine supersonic Mach 1.8 fighter has a combat range, 3,000 kilometers and is capable of hitting up to six targets simultaneously.

The developer of KAZ "Arena-M" has revealed some details of the complex

Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation

Разработчик КАЗ «Арена-М» раскрыл некоторые подробности работы комплекса

The Arena-M active protection complex, planned for installation on Russian T-72 and T-90 tanks , is capable of providing all-round protection from almost the entire range of anti-tank guided missiles, including Spikes and Javelins. This was reported in the Mechanical Engineering Design Bureau (KBM). The TV channel "Zvezda" has released the fourth documentary in the series " Weapons of the Invincible". In this series, an interview was shown with the head of the development and advanced design department of the Kolomna KBM Vladimir Kharkin, who spoke about the Arena-M KAZ.

As the specialist explained, "Arena-M" provides all-round protection of the tank, including in the upper sphere, from practically the entire spectrum of self-guided ammunition, including the most modern types of the Israeli "Spike" and the American "Javelin".

"The ammunition is fired, and depending on which direction the target is flying, it turns in that direction. There are special impulse correction engines that allow you to deploy (ammunition to the target) in a minimum time. One ammunition covers the protection sector 5 times more, this made it possible to provide completely all-round protection and expanded the protection sector from above

- said Kharkin.

The system is installed in bulletproof compartments outside the turret of the tank and operates in automatic mode, providing double protection in each direction of attack. The system carries out radar tracking and destruction of flying targets. The principle of operation of the complex lies in the defeat of the PTS with a directed stream of heavy fragments when a detonated striking element is detonated when approaching a tank at ranges from 20 to 50 m. The complex provides protection in sectors in azimuth up to 360 and sectors in elevation from minus 6 to 20 degrees.

Note that the Arena-M KAZ has been undergoing tests for a long time, including military ones. The T-72B3 and T-90M tanks with the Arena-M KAZ installed were seen at the West-2021 exercises. In addition, a T-80UM2 tank with a Drozd-2 active protection system from the 4th Guards Kantemirovskaya Tank Division was spotted in preparation for the exercise.

In January 2017, the General Designer of the Corporation "Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering" (KBM, Kolomna) Valery Kashin said that the new Arena-M active protection complex (KAZ) would be installed on T-72 and T-90 tanks and that it was being tested under the personal control of the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces, Colonel-General Oleg Salyukov. In 2018, it was reported that UVZ purchased elements of the Arena-M KAZ

The advantages of the new light tactical aircraft Su-75 Checkmate are in equipment and competitive cost. Thanks to them, the Russian fighter can bypass foreign manufacturers, said US columnist Mark Episkopos in an article for The National Interest .

The journalist named other advantages of the fifth generation fighter: for example, it can reach speeds of up to 1900 kilometers per hour, and its combat radius is three thousand kilometers. In addition, the Su-75 Checkmate is equipped with a "second stage" engine and a modern glass cockpit.

The Russian fighter can also compete with foreign ones in carrying capacity: for the Su-75 it exceeds seven tons and allows the transfer of universal weapons, which include medium and short-range RVV-MD and RVV-SD missiles, air-to-ground missiles from the Thunder family ", A large number of guided and unguided bombs.

The Russian fifth-generation fighter Su-75 will be created without attracting foreign investment, said the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov in early September. According to him, a budget has already been drawn up with the participation of the programs of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and off-budget funds of Rostec and the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). Foreign participation in the creation of a light tactical aircraft (LTS), known as Checkmate and Su-75, is not ruled out.

MOSCOW, September 16 / Radio Sputnik. State tests of the newest anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) S-500 have been completed, its deliveries to the troops have begun, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov told reporters at the Tyumen Oil and Gas Forum , RIA Novosti reports .

He stressed that in order to start exporting systems, the permission of the President of the country and the availability of relevant applications from foreign partners will be required.

Missile systems supplied to other states will differ from those used by the Russian army. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, this is a common practice - the characteristics of exported weapons "should not exceed domestic ones."

Answering a question from journalists about the first potential buyer of S-500 systems, Borisov noted close cooperation between Russia and India . "India is the largest exporter of Russian arms. And we sometimes sell to India what we do not sell to other countries, because we have no political or territorial claims among ourselves. Or conflict situations," the official said.

He recalled that India has established licensed production of Russian T-90 tanks and Su-30MKI aircraft .

“Apart from the simple sale of weapons, we also share technologies with India,” Borisov added.

State tests of the S-500 began last year. Then the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Alexei Krivoruchko said that the military expects to receive the first air defense systems in 2021, and serial delivery will begin in another four years.

The S-500 Prometheus is a new generation of long-range surface-to-air anti-aircraft missile systems and high-altitude interception. The complexes are capable of intercepting not only ballistic missiles, but also cruise missiles, as well as other air targets.

The S-500 complex is capable of simultaneously detecting and destroying up to ten supersonic targets moving at speeds up to seven kilometers per hour. The radius of destruction of the missile system is about 600 kilometers.

Earlier, radio Sputnik reported on the supply of what weapons Russia and Belarus had agreed on .

And from the short audio clip below you will find out why the S-300 and S-500 air defense systems instill fear in NATO .
