Brazilian ARES to field test its newly developed 30 mm TORC30 (RWS)

Brazilian ARES seeks vehicle tests for its air defence RWS

Victor Barreira, Istanbul - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

21 April 2017

ARES Aeroespacial e Defesa, Elbit Systems' Brazilian operation, hopes to field test its newly developed 30 mm TORC30 remote weapon station (RWS) on an Iveco VBTP-MR Guarani 6x6 amphibious armoured vehicle.

ARES is awaiting a vehicle from the Brazilian Army in order to integrate the turret and carry out initial field evaluation tests, the company told Jane's on 20 April. Two prototypes - one experimental and another operational - were manufactured and the latter was approved for operation during factory tests, he added.

However, the Brazilian Army is not currently considering procuring the weapon station, a service official recently told Jane's.

The TORC30 system allows the remote operation of a 30mm Rheinmetall MK30-2 / ABM cannon, mounted on a shielded vehicle, stabilized in direction and elevation with the vehicle in motion, observing and identifying ground and aerial targets with the use of camera and monitor , And aiming and firing the weapon from a remote control station inside the car.

  • Low profile tower
  • Armed with a 30mm automatic cannon and equipped with a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and smoke grenade launchers
  • Two autonomous day and night observation systems, one for the commander and one for the sniper
  • Computerized control and shooting control system, allowing high-precision shooting during movement (continuous, burst or intermittent)
  • Tripping rate up to 600 shots / minute
  • It also features STANAG 4569 level 2 standard NATAN modular shielding, expandable up to level 4, distributed throughout the tower including observation systems
  • It has a laser alert system against external threats
  • Prediction of sniper detection system
  • Prediction of integration with anti-car missile system
  • Automatic target tracking system
  • Internal tower access for handling and maintenance, giving greater safety to the crew

The optimum combination of a high rate of fire and state-of-the-art ammunition technology makes the MK30-2/ABM an uncompromising, highly reliable weapon system. With a maximum effective range of 3,000 metres, the MK30-2/ABM is extremely effective against land, air and sea targets. The MK30-2/ABM is the main armament of the new German Puma infantry fighting vehicle. Source rheinmetall-defence.com
