Volga-Dnepr Group could see its AN-124s back in the air earlier than expected, following “very good dialogue” with Ukrainian engine manufacturer Motor Sich.

The airline expects directives on the engine to be published shortly, allowing work to start soon, according to group chief commercial officer Konstantin Vekshin.

“There is a set of actions that have to be performed, and we are hoping work can start in Leipzig on 10 or 12 December,” he said. “We expect it will take one week per aircraft.”

Volga-Dnepr has 12 AN-124s, of which eight were operating when it decided to ground the aircraft last week, following concerns over the engines.

Mr Vekshin said that, although it was still speculation, there was a chance it had been an isolated incident on the aircraft forced to make an emergency landing in Novosibirsk last month.

“The experts are starting inspections soon and we are in daily contact with the Russian aviation authorities and Motor Sich. Everyone is working on it now. It’s been a serious test for all of us, but everyone has been very positive.”

Mr Vekshin said he was grateful to customers for their support: “We accommodated customers as much as we could, and they have been very understanding, professional, and supported our safety-first approach.”

And the damaged aircraft may fly again, he said.

“The good news is it is now on a hard surface and in a good position for us to inspect it. It is still a work in progress though.”

The group is hoping for a gradual return to operations, with the chance that some aircraft could be operating before the end of the year.

“We will take our time, but there is light at the end of the tunnel,” said Mr Vekshin. “We know what needs to happen. In a couple of weeks, we’ll be in a better position to give a timeline and there will be more updates.

“We have all the necessary support, and we will try to get the aircraft back as quickly as we can. The market needs that airplane.”

Russian S-500 missile system could destroy the F-35 Lightning II fighters, US says

WASHINGTON, (BM) – American journalists concluded that the Russian Prometheus air defense system could destroy the 5th generation F-35 Lightning II fighters created in the USA, learned BulgarianMilitary.com. These planes have become the most costly for the United States, but they still have shortcomings regularly.

The Russian anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) S-500 “Prometheus” is the killer of the American fifth-generation fighter F-35 Lightning II, according to a publication on the website of The National Interest. The S-400 Triumph air defense system entered service in 2007, but even then, Russian specialists began to work on its possible replacement, the author said.

As highlighted in the magazine, the S-500 “Prometheus” is capable of detecting and simultaneously attacking up to ten ballistic missile warheads. S-500 could do it even if the missile flying at a speed of more than four miles per second [more than 6.4 km/s], as well as hitting low-orbit satellites and several types of spacecraft in tight space.

The F-35 Lightning II is a 5th generation fighter-bomber built in the USA. It was designed with signature reduction technology and is capable of carrying nuclear warheads. In addition to the United States, Australia, Britain, Denmark, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, and Turkey participate in the project for its production.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II program turned out to be the most expensive in the history of weapons production: the American side spent almost $1.5 trillion on it. Developers have exceeded their projected initial costs by hundreds of billions of dollars. But, despite this, Pentagon commissioned the fighter only seven years after the expected date. Moreover, subsequently, experts have repeatedly pointed out the malfunctions of this technique.

As for the Russian S-500 Prometheus, it belongs to a new generation of surface-to-air air defense systems. It is a versatile long-range and high-altitude intercept complex with an increased missile defense potential. S-500 could eliminate ballistic and aerodynamic targets – aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles.

In July this year, the German magazine Focus wrote that thanks to the new S-500 complex, Russia was 15-20 years ahead of the United States and other Western countries in air defense matters. The journalists stressed that even the latest 5th generation fighters using stealth technologies could become easy prey for Prometheus.

The publication drew attention to the fact that these complexes were initially going to be in service in 2025, but later it became clear that this could happen in the current one. “The S-500 complex can destroy almost all existing and noteworthy targets in tight space and atmosphere. Therefore it is capable of solving strategic issues in the field of missile defense,” the publication quoted military specialist Igor Korotchenko as saying.

As the journalists pointed out in the material, the S-500 air defense system has become an “omnivorous” system, significantly ahead of the Western air defense systems [air defense]. Besides, last year, Chinese experts spoke of Prometheus as the most advanced complex globally, which can shoot down even meteorites.

The commander-in-chief of the Aerospace Forces, Sergei Surovikin, previously said in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda that the S-500 is capable of destroying hypersonic weapons in near-earth space.

He clarified that the “Prometheus” technical characteristics make it possible to refer it to the first generation of anti-space defense systems. “The characteristics laid down in the S-500 air defense system make it possible to destroy, in addition to aerodynamic and ballistic targets, hypersonic weapons of all modifications, including in near space,” the commander-in-chief stressed.

This mobile complex can hit all types of targets ranging up to 480-600 km and at altitudes up to 200 km. As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, “Prometheus” is capable of “working on targets at ultra-high altitudes, including near space.” In addition to ballistic missiles and their warheads, Russia can also use the S-500 to intercept 5th generation stealth fighters, strategic bombers, and early warning and control aircraft.

Dogfight! American THAAD vs. the Russian S-400/S-500 air defense missile systems

Russian air defense systems S-400 and S-500 are advertised in the press and are in demand in many countries. However, are they effective? Experts wanted to answer this question. The American THAAD air defense system was taken as an object for comparison. So, the first parameter was the maximum range. At the S-500 it is 400 kilometers. A similar indicator for Ted and S-400 is at the level of 250 km.

The next component is the detection range of enemy objects. The THAAD has a thousand kilometers. S-500 and S-400 are more modest distances – 800 and 600 km. After all, the sooner the target is discovered, the more time is left for a decision.

The situation is different with subtle goals. THAAD can recognize them at a distance of 700 km. The S-500 and S-400 have a more modest indicator: 420 and 400 kilometers. The western model has superiority and maximum flight altitude. The THAAD has 200 kilometers. At the S-500 it is 2 times less. In turn, the S-400 is able to boast a modest 30 km.

However, the S-500 with 7200 m/s is the leader in terms of interception speed. Next come the THAAD (5400 m/s) and the S-400 (4800 m/s). In terms of ballistic missiles, the THAAD is again ahead with a distance of 250 km. The S-500 and S-400 range is 180 and 40 kilometers. From this we can conclude that the THAAD anti-ballistic missile defense systems are not inferior to Russian-made. In some respects, superiority is even observed.

Some experts argue that such a comparison is impossible, as it is two different in functionality and purpose missile systems

This comparison is not correct, since we are talking about systems with different specializations, Russian and Amercian military experts said. The American THAAD system (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) is a mobile land-based missile defense system designed for high-altitude atmospheric destruction of medium-range ballistic missiles.

At the same time, the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system is designed primarily for hitting aerodynamic targets (aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles), its ability to combat ballistic targets is limited in range and height. At the same time, of course, the Russian system is more universal. THAAD’s capabilities in the fight against maneuverable targets and aircraft are minimal, while using such a missile defense system would be tantamount to hammering nails, especially considering the cost of US missile defense.

The THAAD mobile ground-based missile defense system, designed for high-altitude transatmospheric interception of medium-range missiles while creating a zonal missile defense system in a theater of operations, has been developed in the United States since 1992.

The system developer is Lockheed Martin Corporation. The cost of R&D to create an anti-ballistic missile system is estimated at about $ 15 billion. The second important difference between THAAD and S-400 is the way to hit the target. An American rocket hits the target with kinetic impact, that is, it hits the rocket itself. Its warhead is a highly maneuverable interceptor. It is a technically sophisticated device that searches for, captures, and hits a target using only the kinetic energy of a high-speed impact.

One of the main features of this interceptor is the gyrostabilized multispectral infrared homing head (IR-GOS). In addition to the IR-GOS, the THAAD single-stage missile interceptor is equipped with a command-inertial control system, an electric power source, a computer, and its own propulsion system for maneuvering and orientation.

At the same time, anti-aircraft missiles of the Russian S-400 Triumph air defense system hit air targets due to a cloud of fragments that form after the warhead of a missile is detonated in the immediate vicinity of the target. It is also worth noting that the S-400 can fire at 360 degrees, while THAAD has a limited firing range. For example, Russian 9M96E and 9M96E2 anti-aircraft missiles, optimized to combat modern high-precision weapons, cruise missiles and ballistic targets, including inconspicuous ones, use a “cold” vertical launch.

Immediately before starting its marching engine, rockets are thrown out of the container to a height of more than 30 meters. After rising to this height, an anti-aircraft missile, using a gas-dynamic system, inclines toward a given target. An important difference between the two complexes is also their radar. The American system has better vision. The detection range of the AN / TPY-2 radar is 1000 kilometers versus 600 kilometers for the S-400 complex.

The multifunctional AN / TPY-2 radar operates in the X-band and consists of 25,344 active PPM. This is a radar with an active phased array (AFAR). AFAR consists of active radiating elements, each of which consists of a radiating element and an active device [transceiver module – PPM].

A very high resolution and vigilance of the American radar is achieved by a huge amount of PPM and a sophisticated signal processing algorithm. At the same time, the American radar costs a pretty penny, the cost of an innovative radar can exceed $ 500 million. Price may play a role. The cost of the S-400 division with 8 launchers is about $ 500 million. So in December 2017, the details of the contract for the supply of S-400 Triumph air defense systems to Turkey became known.

Ankara should receive 4 S-400 divisions for a total of about $ 2.5 billion. At the same time, the Pentagon’s Defense Cooperation and Security Directorate announced that the deal with Saudi Arabia for the supply of THAAD missile defense systems amounted to about $ 15 billion. Under the contract, the kingdom will receive from the United States 44 launchers, 16 command posts, 7 radars, as well as 360 interceptor missiles for this complex.

The future is clearing up: "Terminators" have reached the troops

In 2017, the Russian Ministry of Defense issued the first order for the supply of Terminator tank / fire support combat vehicles. Soon, this technique was built and even took part in the parade on Red Square. However, only now the first batch of BMPTs is entering trial operation on the basis of one of the formations of the ground forces.

Last news

On December 1, the press service of the Central Military District and the NPK Uralvagonzavod reported on the arrival of new equipment in the troops. A batch of eight BMPTs was transferred to the 90th Guards Tank Vitebsk-Novgorod twice Red Banner division of the Central Military District (Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions). Experimental military operation of such vehicles is organized on the basis of the division's motorized rifle subunits.

According to the press service of the Central Military District, the crews for the new combat vehicles have already been formed and are now undergoing retraining. Military personnel are introduced to the design features, basic qualities and combat capabilities. Training events are held with the participation of representatives of the manufacturer.

Details of future trial operation are not provided. At the same time, messages from Uralvagonzavod and the Central Military District indicate the main features, functions and advantages of the new model of equipment. It should be expected that in the course of the upcoming events, the servicemen of the 90th Guards Tank Division will check how the real characteristics and capabilities of the new equipment correspond to the manufacturer's statements.

Long way to the troops

The first versions of the modern BMPT, which gave rise to a whole family of projects, appeared at the turn of the nineties and two thousandths. Such equipment regularly participated in exhibitions and attracted public attention - but the interest of the army was limited. One of the BMPT versions passed all the necessary tests and was even recommended for service, but did not enter the army.

The situation changed only a few years ago. The first contract for the supply of Terminators to the Russian ground forces was signed at the Army-2017 forum. It provided for the construction and transfer of 12 production vehicles by the end of 2018. Already at the beginning of 2018, NPK Uralvagonzavod showed the first BMPTs of this order. Shortly thereafter, three armored vehicles took part in the parade on Red Square.

In the autumn of the same year, the Ministry of Defense announced the imminent transfer of 10 BMPTs to units of the 90th Guards Tank Division for trial operation. It was planned to spend about a year on these events. However, as follows from further messages, such a transfer did not take place.

Apparently, the technique of the first batch needed certain modifications, which took a lot of time to complete. Because of this, the real terms of the transfer of the "Terminators" to the 90th division have shifted to the right by more than two years. In addition, the first batch included 8 cars, and not 10, as reported in 2018.

The future is clearing up

At the moment, there is only one contract for the supply of "Terminators" to the Russian army, and it provides for the construction of only 12 vehicles. New orders for this equipment have not yet appeared, and the possibility of placing them is still in question. The reasons for this are simple and related to the current success of the entire program.

According to the 2017 contract, NPK Uralvagonzavod must assemble and deliver 12 BMPTs to the customer. This equipment must pass all the necessary checks, fine-tuning and experimental military operation. Only after all these measures can the army make final conclusions and place new orders. As the events of 2018-2020 show, at the time of the launch of production, the equipment needed fine-tuning.

Fortunately, some of the necessary measures have been successfully completed, and the Terminators have reached military operation. This means that the identified shortcomings have been successfully corrected, and in the foreseeable future the Ministry of Defense will be able to draw final conclusions. Then new orders should be expected, due to which other formations will be re-equipped.

The general needs of the Russian army for BMPT are still unknown. Motorized rifle units of the 90th Guards Tank Division received only 8 vehicles; where the other 4 products of the first order will go has not yet been specified. In addition, it is not known whether all the division's needs for such equipment have been met. The number of divisions that can be retrofitted with "Terminators" is also questionable. Thus, the number of BMPTs required by the troops can be estimated within a fairly wide range - from tens to hundreds of pieces.

Interest for troops

A recent press release from the Ministry of Defense mentions the main advantages of the BMPT and the reasons why such equipment is of interest to the troops. So, the use of "Terminators" in the same battle formations with tanks allows you to increase the capabilities of the unit and reduce the risks for combat vehicles. BMPT is capable of fighting lightly armored vehicles and tanks, as well as participating in military air defense, hitting low-flying planes and helicopters.

Other advantages are also mentioned in the message from NPK Uralvagonzavod. Thus, the main barrel armament can be used with large elevation angles, which allows attacking targets on the upper floors of buildings. The complex of weapons is multi-channel. The BMPT ammunition size is twice the size of a typical modern infantry fighting vehicle. It is argued that one "Terminator" in its combat effectiveness corresponds to two infantry fighting vehicles and a platoon of motorized riflemen.

In general, the BMPT is an armored combat vehicle of an unusual type with protection and mobility at the level of the main tank and more diverse weapons to defeat a wide range of targets in a wide range of ranges, incl. with the possibility of simultaneous shelling of several. This unusual concept is still a topic of controversy; the same applies to the question of the need for such armored vehicles of the army. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense has already provided positive answers to both questions. The BMPT was considered necessary for the ground forces, which resulted in a contract for the first production vehicles and the recent news of the beginning of experimental military operation.

In parallel with the preparation of the Terminators for full service, the development of the project continues. New modifications of armored vehicles with new weapon systems are proposed. A great future is predicted for a variant of the BMPT with a 57-mm automatic cannon of increased power. The possibility of transferring the Terminator units to the modern Armata platform is also being considered. However, all these projects are still at the very early stages.

The long-awaited ending?

The latest news is conducive to optimism, but does not put an end to the protracted epic with the creation, promotion and development of tank support combat vehicles. Eight "Terminators" made it to the experimental military operation, which could open the way for mass production and use of such equipment.

Earlier it was reported that it will take about a year for trial operation in the troops. This means that at the end of 2021, the Ministry of Defense will be able to decide on further plans for the BMPT and take appropriate steps. Most likely, a positive scenario will be launched, and new orders for serial equipment will appear. Thus, the timing and volumes of future purchases are now becoming an urgent issue.

Israeli Defense Ministry to Sell Surplus F-16s to Canadian Company Top Aces for $100 Million - MilitaryLeak

December 1, 2020
by Admin

The Israeli Defense Ministry is in negotiations to sell 29 retired F-16 fighter jets to a Canadian company. The deal is valued at $100 million, and is set to be the largest of its kind ever. The planes are General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon of the A/B variety, and had been in the Israeli Air Force’s possession since the 1980s, the last of which was retired from service in 2016. The Israeli Defense Ministry’s Export Agency (SIBAT) which is responsible for selling used military equipment is overseeing the deal.

Top Aces provides the Canadian Air Force, the U.S. Air Force, and the Australian Air Force aircraft that simulate enemy combat threats, also known as the “Red Force”: its aircraft and pilots imitate enemy aircraft and practice interception drills against “Blue Force,” or the military. The company also offers services to Western navies that are interested in conducting exercises that involve combating airstrikes. the company has already announced that it will soon be adding F-16s to its fleet that now includes Skyhawk and Alpha jet aircraft.

The Israel Air Force parts from the “Netz” (F-16A/B) jets that are completing their service in the IAF after 36 years of operational activity.

The use of a private company to facilitate the transaction also cheapens the deal, since employing used planes and private pilots is cheaper than using new combat planes and operational pilots. In the 1980s, the U.S. Air Force purchased Israeli Kfir aircraft for these enemy smulations, but now uses private companies for the same operations. In 2019, the U.S. Air Force paid $6.4 million to seven private companies to provide enemy simulation services, some of whom purchased surplus Israeli Kfir and Skyhawk aircraft.

The Israel Defense Force/Air Force ordered a total of 362 F-16s, from early F-16A/Bs to the latest F-16I. Fifty of these aircraft were surplus USAF aircraft, given to Israel by the US as payment for restraint during the 1991 Gulf War despite Scud attacks. All Israeli F-16s are fitted with custom Israeli electronics. Israeli F-16s have been used extensively in combat, and scored 47 kills to date. They were also used in the bombing of the Iraq’s nuclear reactor in Osirak.

Naval pilot Lewis makes history earning Wings on new trainer

Naval pilot Lewis makes history earning Wings on new trainer

30 November 2020

The first naval aviator has earned his Wings on the military’s new fast jet trainer.

Lieutenant Lewis Phillips received the proud emblem of a qualified pilot after 12 demanding months at RAF Valley in Anglesey, where he was taught the basics of operating a 21st-Century fast jet in the Texan T1.

First in the classrooms and simulators, and then in the Texan’s cockpit, he’s learned the fundamentals of handling a jet-engine aircraft, including formation flying, low-level navigation and coping with all weather conditions.

Twelve months ago, the 30-year-old from Portsmouth was the first trainee jet pilot to fly solo in a Texan.

And a year on, he’s now the first Fleet Air Arm flier to earn his Wings in the aircraft, the only naval aviator among six pilots who graduated from 72 Squadron at Valley.

The Texan replaced the (very similar looking) Tucano which served fast-jet pilots well for the past 30 years.

But with today’s fully-digital jets and helicopters, the analogue trainer was seen as obsolete and phased out.

Its successor has a fully digitised (aka ‘glass’) cockpit, reaches top speeds of more than 360mph and can climb as high as 31,000ft.

All of which means students must get used to wearing G-suits to counter the effects of gravity on the strains and stresses of flight, an immersion suit in case the Texan has to ditch, wearing an oxygen mask rather than breathing normally.

It certainly isn't lost on me that I wear the same uniform – and now the same Wings – as all those who came before me

Lieutenant Lewis Phillips
“The Texan is really nice to fly and a noticeable power increase from previous aircraft I’ve flown – the Tutor and Prefect,” said Lewis.

“Having a ‘glass’ cockpit is also a huge benefit and step change in training, allowing instructors to deliver electronic warfare threats we need to defend against and make a sortie feel a lot more realistic.”

Lewis spent nine years in the Navy as an air traffic control officer, before swapping the control tower for the cockpit.

The long road to becoming a fast-jet pilot begins with learning the basics of flight at Barkston Heath in Lincolnshire in the Grob Tutor, then moves to Valley and the Texan which handles like a jet despite being propeller-driven, then on to jets and finally a conversion course to a front-line fighter.

In Lewis’ case it’s not Hawk then F-35, but an exchange programme with the Americans (part of the Long Lead programme as part of the RN’s return to carrier strike operations).

He’ll get his first jet experience in a T45 Goshawk trainer – the US Navy’s counterpart to the Hawk – before moving on to the F-18 Super Hornet, the mainstay of combat operations on America’s carrier fleet.

"I am honoured to be the first Royal Navy pilot to graduate with Wings on the Texan T1,” Lewis continued.

“It certainly isn't lost on me that I wear the same uniform – and now the same Wings – as all those who came before me.

“I am excited about the career which lies ahead and although receiving my wings indicates the end to my initial training as a pilot, it also indicates the beginning of an even steeper learning curve – a challenge which I look forward to."

Development of Next Generation S-500 Air Defense System Nears Completion

Development of Next Generation S-500 Air Defense System Nears Completion - Caspian News

By Vusala Abbasova
December 1, 2020

The upcoming Russian S-500 system is being developed by the state-owned Almaz-Antey Corporation, which also developed the S-400 and S-300 air defense systems.

The world’s second-largest military power continues to gradually build up its defense capability with a next-generation version of mobile S-500 air defense system. The system - capable of destroying all existing and promising aerial targets in near space and in the atmosphere - will be ready next year.

In an interview with the Defense Ministry’s Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, Andrei Yudin, Aerospace Force Deputy Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant-General, said that Russia will complete its work on the most advanced S-500 anti-aircraft missile system in 2021.

"It should be noted that the work on developing the S-500 mobile air defense and anti-ballistic missile system is scheduled to be completed in 2021," Russia Today quoted Yudin as saying on Friday.

Russian S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems, dubbed Prometey, are by far the most advanced anti-missile system in the Russian arsenal and claim to be the best in the world. Branded as a silver bullet against stealth fighters in general and the F-35 in particular, the S-500 is reportedly capable to destroy low-orbit satellites and fifth-generation aircraft, in addition to its primary targets - cruise and ballistic missiles, which could already be dealt with by existing S-300 and S-400 units.

Created on the basis of the S-400, the range of the new Russian air defense system is expected to significantly surpass its predecessors. The S-500 will likely use a variety of missiles in addition to the 77N6 missile series, currently under development for the S-400, as a hit-to-kill interceptor for ballistic missile targets. With a widely expected maximum operating range of 600 km (373 miles) and a system response time of 3 to 4 seconds, the S-500 reaches a whopping 200 km (124 miles) farther and is around 6 seconds faster to respond than its S-400 predecessor.

The upcoming Russian S-500 system is being developed by the state-owned Almaz-Antey Corporation, which also developed the S-400 and S-300 air defense systems. Currently, the S-400 Triumf is considered Russia’s latest long- and medium-range surface-to-air missile system. It can engage targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers (249 miles) and at an altitude of up to 30 kilometers (19 miles) under intensive enemy fire and jamming.

Last year, Russian Deputy Prime Minister on defense industry Yuri Borisov announced the phased testing of various elements of Russia's next-generation air and missile defense system was already undergoing, as well as the launching of new missiles that have no analogues in the world. The Ministry of Defense stated later that the first S-500 set could be transferred to the troops in 2021, then, after several years, mass production will be launched. In this regard, Almaz-Antey put into operation three new sites in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Kirov.

Some experts believe that competitors of similar systems may appear no earlier than in 15-20 years, until that time in the West they will not be able to create such technologies. One of the competitors of the S-500 is the American mobile anti-ballistic missile complex THAAD, but its capabilities are limited only by the atmospheric interception of medium-range missiles, while the S-500 is a multifunctional system.

Meanwhile, western defense experts have already expressed their concerns over the deployment of the S-500 system, which is expected to be networked with the existing systems, including S-400, S-300 and S-350 and other weapons, to provide an integrated defense system. This, in turn, could pose a threat for their stealth aircraft like the F-22, F-35 and B-2, reported the National Interest.

KONGSBERG awarded second follow-on JSM contract with Japan valued 820 MNOK - KONGSBERG

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS (KONGSBERG) has entered into a second follow-on contract with Japan to supply the JSM (Joint Strike Missile) for their fleet of F-35 fighter aircraft. The contract is valued 820 MNOK.

 01 Dec 2020

The JSM is a 5th generation stealth air-to surface missile developed to fill F-35A anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and land attack capability gaps. JSM can be carried internally in the F-35 thus ensuring the aircraft’s low-signature capabilities. The JSM has superior performance against well-defended sea- and land targets across long distances.

“The international F-35 user community is continuing to show great interest in the JSM and  KONGSBERG is very proud to have been selected by Japan to provide the JSM for their F-35 fleet. “Our relationship is growing even stronger with this second follow-on contract”, says Eirik Lie, President, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS.
