Italian Navy Special Forces receive fast boat Angelo Cabrini | Naval Today
Italian Navy special forces – the Operational Raiders Group (Gruppo Operativo Incursori) – received the first of two high-speed multi-purpose vessels from Intermarine on July 8.
Angelo Cabrini was delivered a little over a year after it was launched and will support missions of GOI, which is part of the Italian Navy’s elite COMSUBIN force.
Intermarine is building two units in the class under a 40 million euro contract from 2016. The second boat, Tullio Tedeschi, was launched in May this year.
Built in composite materials, the boats have a length of 44.16 meters, a beam of 8.4 meters, and displace 190 tons. They feature a stern ramp to embark a rigid hull inflatable boat Zodiac Hurricane 733 for COMSUBIN operational units, and an integrated launch and recovery system.
The propulsion system consisting of three pairs of Kamewa waterjets and 16V 2000 M94 MTU diesel engines, installed in two different engine rooms, delivers a top speed of more than 30 knots. The waterjets offer high manoeuvrability and responsiveness to maintain stability when the boat is flanking other units.
A modular area in the covered aft section of the deck is designed for various types of operation, including naval assault operations and release and recovery of commandos involved in special operations. Specific configurations are available for the installation of a containerized decompression chamber to support underwater activities.
