Turkey to consider procurement of Russian Su-35 jets

Turkey to consider procurement of Russian Su-35 jets - Sputnik | Ahval

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will examine the feasibility of Russian Su-35 fighter jets acquisition following the U.S. decision to expel Turkey from F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme, Sputnik said on Thursday, citing a Turkish military source.

U.S. officials consider Turkey’s purchase of Russian-built S-400 missile defence systems an unacceptable risk to NATO hardware, including the new generation F-35 stealth fighters. Turkey was formally expelled from the F-35 programme on Wednesday, after receiving its first shipments of S-400s last week.

"It is still premature to talk about Turkey’s purchase of Russian Su-35 fighters. Our president will assess this important topic. He will also make a statement," Sputnik quoted the source as saying.

According to earlier reports, Turkey had been considering the purchase of latest-generation Russian Su-57 fighter jets as a replacement for the F-35 jets.

The head of Russia's top state-run industrial conglomerate Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, on May 2 said Moscow was "ready to cooperate" with Turkey on the issue of Su-57s if the country's planned F-35 purchase order fell through.

After the announcement of Turkey's expulsion from F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme, Chemezov echoed his previous offer on Thursday, this time offering the Russian Su-35.
