Russia may continue to build Project 955 Borei nuclear-powered strategic missile-carrying submarines after all ten such submarines contracted to date are ready. This was announced by a member of the board of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation, a member of the Marine Board under the government, Vladimir Pospelov.
“The series can be continued. The project has shown itself to be successful, has good prospects for modernization, "he said in an interview with RIA Novosti on May 17, answering the question whether the series will end after the construction of the ninth and tenth such submarines.
Pospelov did not name the exact number of additional Boreyevs, but added that the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START-3) clearly defines the number of launchers and warheads. According to him, these two parameters determine the number of carriers.
A member of the board of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation also said that the Russian Navy (Navy) in 2021 will receive about 40 ships and support vessels of various classes.
"It is planned to hand over ships of the frigate and corvette classes, the next serial diesel-electric submarines of project 636.3, as well as small missile ships, patrol boats and support ships, will be handed over," Pospelov stressed.
He noted that the list includes, among other things, the fourth-generation nuclear-powered strategic submarine of the fourth generation Knyaz Oleg of the Borey-A project, the first serial submarine of the Yasen-M project, Novosibirsk. He recalled that the lead multipurpose nuclear submarine "Kazan" of the same type project was recently adopted by the Navy.
On May 11, sources in the defense department told Izvestia that the Russian Ministry of Defense will strengthen the Northern Fleet with the latest strategic submarine of Project 955 Borey. It is noted that the department is reviewing plans for the distribution of ships that will enter service in the near future.
In April, the general director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov said that the strategic nuclear submarine of project 955A of the Borei-A class "Prince Oleg" will be ready for transfer to the Russian Navy in October.
Strategic missile submarine cruisers (SSBNs) of the Borey class (project 955) were designed at the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering in St. Petersburg. During their construction, new achievements are applied in the creation of shipborne electronic equipment to reduce noise. Boreyev's main armament is the new Bulava missile system.
