The multi-mission OPV 87 ARA Storni was launched in May this year.

Naval Group has delivered the newest multi-mission offshore patrol vessel (OPV), ARA Storni, to the Argentinian Navy.

ARA Storni is the third of four OPVs ordered by Argentina as part of a contract signed with Naval Group in 2018.

The OPVs are being built in France by Kership, a joint venture (JV) between Naval Group and Piriou.

The contract includes the refurbishment of Naval Group-built OPV L’Adroit and three new-build vessels.

ARA Bouchard (former L’Adroit) was delivered in December 2019, while the first of three new-build vessels, ARA Piedrabuena, was handed over to the Argentinian Navy in April this year.

Naval Group programme director Jean-Claude Flandrin said: “The delivery of this third patrol vessel marks a very important milestone for the program, which was achieved on time despite the health crisis that has marked the last two years.

“The teams are still mobilised to finalise the training of the crew that will leave for Argentina with the vessel. Once the training is completed, we will concentrate our efforts towards the delivery of the last of the series, which was launched last month”.

According to the company, ARA Storni offers the same features as that of the ARA Piedrabuena and is better armed when compared to the ARA Bouchard OPV.

ARA Storni is equipped with an active stabilisation system and a bow thruster, the POLARIS system and NiDL tactical data link system.

The 87m-long vessel has a displacement capacity of 1,650t, a 14m beam, an endurance of more than 7,000nm, and a maximum speed of over 20k.

It can accommodate 59 crew and passengers and comprises boarding capacity for two 9m light crafts and one 10t class helicopter.

Naval Group Latin America sales director Olivier Michel said: “We are proud of the trust that the Argentine Navy has placed in Naval Group for the supply of these latest-generation multipurpose vessels that will enable the country to carry out its sovereign missions.

“This delivery is another demonstration of Naval Group’s and its partners’ capacities and commitment towards its customers to respond to their operational needs.”
