Russian aviation aircraft could all become "invisible"

The United States has developed a technique for drawing aircraft invisible to radar. However, the Russians focused their scientific research not on the shape of aircraft, but on their materials. They can now easily stealth any of their aircraft.

The United States has invested heavily in the development of the 5th generation F-35 aircraft. They want to produce 5,000 copies in the next decade including 2,400 for the US military, the rest for export. This is why the United States is not interested in any other technology in the field of aviation.

The Russian army's staffing plan provides for only 12 "invisible" Su-57 planes, with the production line remaining free to export the aircraft. Plans for the MiG-41 fighter, the PAK TA transport aircraft and the PAK-DA bomber, all "invisible", were frozen. In contrast, the existing Tu-160 and Tu-22M3 bombers have been upgraded. Is Russia still behind the United States?

In September 2018, Instagram featured a photo of an "invisible" US F-22 , taken with the infrared sight of a Russian Su-35 S over Syria. The Su-35 S, which is not "invisible", managed to reach the attack position without being detected on the F-22 radar, AWACS or ground radar. According to our sources, the Su-35 S had experimental equipment using metamaterials.

The design of the F-22, B-2 and F-35 was done by computer. The junction angles of the structure were designed to emit the waves around the radar rather than reflecting them directly onto the transmitting radar antenna. Thus, these 5th generation aircraft become detectable at radar at smaller distances (40 km).

In contrast, the innovative metamaterial technology absorbs 90% of the radar waves and can be applied to any existing aircraft. This is why Russia is not very interested in fifth-generation aircraft.

Metamaterials are three-dimensional structures based on special electromagnetic cells, 1 to 2 millimeters in size, effective in the millimeter and centimeter wavelengths in which aircraft radars and ground radars operate. They do not affect the reception of radionavigation systems, conventional communications and satellite communications.

Research in this field has taken place at the Institute of Applied and Applied Electromagnetism of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Andrey N. Lagarkov, VN Semenenko and VN Kissel published in October 2010 the results of their research in the field of absorbent radar structures built from metamaterials (see downloadable document at the bottom of the page). Applications of this technology have been tested on Russian military aircraft since 2015.

If Russia is successful in testing metamaterial technology, it can modernize the entire fleet of aircraft at a fraction of the cost.

Until now, US planes had been the only ones able to detect the enemy first and attack it before being "seen" by the radar. By annihilating the superiority of US military aviation, we will return to the combat maneuvers of the 1950s. In these conditions, the aerodynamic superiority due to the vectorial thrust of the Su-35, Su-30 and MiG-35 will give aircraft an important advantage over the F-22 and F-35.

For the moment, the problem is that metamaterial technology is still in the research phase and the operating time of electromagnetic cells does not exceed 100 hours. After that, you have to replace them.
