Japan’s Subaru Corporation is to set up a unit to develop technologies in support of the Japanese government’s project to develop and build a next-generation fighter aircraft.

The group said in a recent statement that its Subaru Aerospace Company will establish a Technology Development Centre. Subaru said the centre would focus on “next-generation fighter technologies” but did not elaborate.

Subaru (formerly Fuji Heavy Industries: FHI) confirmed the development to Jane’s on 6 April but, at the time of publication, had not responded to requests for additional information.

Subaru was previously involved in the development of a fighter technology demonstrator programme, led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
