The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has confirmed that it will reduce its 2020 budget due to the impact of Covid-19, with the decision delaying plans to procure platforms including two additional submarines from China.
RTN spokesperson Vice Admiral Prachachat Sirisawat said on 18 April that THB4.1 billion (USD126.2 million) – or about one-third of the navy’s planned modernisation funds for the year – will be cut as part of wider government efforts to alleviate the economic impact of the pandemic.
In comments reported by the government-run Thai News Agency, Vice Admiral Prachachat said the budget reduction would delay the RTN’s procurement of two additional S26T diesel-electric submarines and plans to construct a submarine docking and maintenance facility.
