Germany plans to buy 45 Boeing-built (NYSE: BA) fighter jets as part of the country's military aircraft modernization efforts, Bloomberg reported Sunday.

A report from Der Spiegel magazine states that Mark Esper, U.S. defense secretary and 2020 Wash100 Award recipient, received an email Thursday from his German counterpart regarding the procurement plan.

The report said that Germany's air force is seeking to acquire 30 F/A-18 Super Hornet jets and 15 EA-18G Growler airborne electronic attack planes.

A Boeing spokesman told Bloomberg in an email that both aircraft platforms have the potential to address German strike fighter and electronic warfare mission requirements.

In 2018, Germany sought proposals from Boeing, Airbus and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) for the Tornado replacement initiative aimed at retiring the aging fleet by 2025.

Boeing also submitted its H-47 Chinook aircraft concept to Germany's heavy-lift helicopter program in January.
