MOSCOW, January 6 - RIA Novosti. The airborne amphibious tank Sprut-SDM1, unique in terms of firepower, will be adopted by the Airborne Forces ( Airborne Forces ) in 2023, at the same time its serial deliveries will begin, a source close to the Airborne Forces headquarters told RIA Novosti.

"According to the plan, the state tests of the newest aeromobile anti-tank gun Sprut-SDM1 should be completed by the end of 2022. In 2023, the car should be put into service, and then its serial deliveries to the Airborne Forces will begin," the agency's source said.

The source added that due to a powerful weapon capable of using guided missiles, a new weapon control system and the presence of a target tracking machine, the Sprut-SDM1's firepower is at the level of main battle tanks. "In fact, the Airborne Forces will receive an airborne amphibious tank, unique in terms of combat capabilities," he said.

As reported earlier in the Ministry of Defense, the Airborne Forces began training commanders for the Octopus from December 1, 2020.

The Sprut-SDM1 self-propelled anti-tank gun, also positioned as a light amphibious tank, was developed and created by Kurganmashzavod PJSC, which is part of the High-Precision Complexes holding of the Rostec State Corporation . The tank is armed with an artillery and missile system of 125 mm caliber. "Octopus" can be transported by ships and airplanes, parachute and landing.

At the end of last year, Sprut-SDM1 was tested in the Black Sea as part of state tests , where it confirmed its ability to overcome water obstacles without preparation in waves of up to three points.

A number of amphibious combat vehicles are used in the world today. Including in service with several countries are the PT-76 amphibious tanks of Soviet design or its modifications, amphibious infantry and airborne combat vehicles are operated in Russia, amphibious BMP-3 and armored personnel carriers based on them are exported. However, all amphibious armored vehicles, with the exception of the Octopus, are equipped with lighter weapons than modern tanks.
