Will our newest “drying” help the Chinese create a sixth generation fighter?
Vladimir Tuchkov
Recently, a wide variety of publications have expressed bewilderment about why the Chinese Air Force wants to buy a batch of the latest Russian Su-57 fighters, which many are skeptical of.
Chinese expert Wang Yongqin , working on the fifth-generation fighter J-31, partially answered this question: the Su-57 will help Chinese designers create a sixth-generation fighter. It also stimulates the development of Chinese engine manufacturing so that it can satisfy the need for new fighter aircraft in power plants.
China has long been purchasing turbofan engines with an afterburner from Russia. Total purchased more than a thousand units. Most of all purchased engines for Su-27 - AL-31F. There are more recent engines - AL-41F1S, used in the Su-35S fighter. And they are installed on the Chinese J-20. In this connection, this fighter is difficult to attribute to the fifth generation, because the five-aircraft, according to the requirements for the generation, must carry out a supersonic flight in the afterburner mode. Su-35S is not capable of this. So, the J-20 is also not capable, although the Chinese are extremely sparingly revealing the parameters of their new military equipment. So to buy several Su-57s, to study the engine thoroughly and to make the same is vital for the Chinese.
However, in the procurement of these fighters there are a number of nuances. The fact is, you can’t take a plane right now. Because it will be sold with the first-stage engine - AL-41F1, developed at the ODK-Saturn Rybinsk engine-building company. Of course, it fully meets the requirements for fifth-generation aircraft power plants. And the main ones are fully electronic control and plasma ignition. However, the thrust, although you can’t call it insufficient, could still be bigger.
And more was planned. In open sources on the Su-57 there are two options for thrust and characteristics derived from it. Because it was planned to use the second stage engine in the fighter, which has not yet been assigned an index and which appears under the serial number - “product 30”.
This new engine is also being created in Rybinsk. But the start of its development occurred later than the designers began to create the AL-41F1. There was a certain reserve. In the 80s, the "response to the F-22" - MiG 1.44 was designed at the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau. It was for him that the AL-41F engine was created, on the basis of which the AL-41F1 engine was made.
Mikoyan’s development has a dramatic and instructive fate. When it was created, stealth technologies were used to the maximum, not only in terms of aircraft coverage, but also in the reflective radio waves of the airframe geometry. All weapons were removed into the internal compartments. EPR was about 0.3 sq.m. The powerful H014 radar (though with a passive phased antenna array) detected targets with an EPR of 1 sq.m. at a distance of 250 km, which is slightly better than the F-22. On-board electronic equipment had an open architecture. They said that the "Russian F-22" developed supersonic speed in the afterburner mode. The maximum speed at altitude with a working afterburner is 3200 km / h.
The prototype in a single copy was built in the late 90s. And on February 29, 2000, 20 years ago, he made his first flight. But in 2002, when it became clear that the OKB would not pull out the project, they put an end to the “Russian F-22”.
The Chinese will not buy the export modification of the aircraft - the Su-57E. Because in it, most likely, the engines of the first stage will be installed. And they desperately need a "product 30". And it is actually ready. With the new engines, one fighter is already flying. A few more engines are ready, tested and transferred to the aircraft factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
Su-57 with a new engine acquired a phenomenal thrust-weight ratio. You can compare with only one American aircraft - F-22. With a normal take-off weight in the Su-57, it is 1.36 against 1.15 in the F-22. At the maximum - respectively 1.1 against 0.88.
China's high-tech military industry is developing in a rather bizarre way. In China, the electronics industry is well developed. Huge achievements in rocket science. The navy has already surpassed the Russian and is inexorably catching up with the American. Strong Chinese satellite constellation. However, with aircraft engines in China, the matter is tight. Which, of course, is a matter of time.
In order to plug this gap, China is taking various measures. Not only in terms of developing our own design school, but also in borrowing existing developments.
So, in 2017, an attempt was made to buy the Ukrainian engine company Motor Sich. A joint venture was established with a production location in Chongqing. Factory buildings began to be built.
However, the deal was frustrated by the Americans. Ukraine desperately needs money, but they did not dare to go against Washington in Kiev.
