The Army Recognition website, citing the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's arms trade database 2020, reported that Algeria has ordered 300 BMPT-72 armored fire support vehicles from Russia.

According to the website, since 2013 Algeria has bought a significant amount of ground-based military equipment from Russia including 38 Pantsir-S1 air defense missile/cannon systems, 100 SA-17 Buk-M2 air defense missile systems installed on tracked vehicles, 12 Iskander mobile short-range ballistic missile systems, and 203 T-90SA main battle tanks.

The tracked BMP-72, also called the Terminator 2, which was entirely developed and designed by the Uralvagonzavod company, was unveiled to the public in 2013. It has the chassis of a Russian T-72 main battle tank. The vehicle offers new protection and firepower, especially in urban operations, according to the website.

The main weapon systems of the BMPT-72 are a 30mm 2A42 automatic gun and a PKTM 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. Ataka-T anti-tank guided missile launchers are mounted on each side of the turret. The anti-tank missile can engage targets at a maximum distance of 6,000m, while the guns have a maximum range of 2,500m against light armored vehicles and 4,000m against light tactical vehicles and troops. The vehicle is fitted with an advanced automatic fire control system, which can be used for terrain observation, target location and detection while on the move, day or night. A laser range finder is also available. The BMPT-72's crew consists of the driver, the commander, and the gunner.
