The technical appearance of the Russian single-engine fighter of the fifth generation Checkmate ("Checkmate") has been formed. This was announced in an interview with TASS by the head of the state corporation "Rostec" Sergei Chemezov on the eve of the international exhibition Dubai Airshow 2021.

According to him, the aircraft will receive advanced on-board electronics, radar with an active phased antenna array (AFAR) and an electronic warfare system (EW).

“We are actively working on the project. The technical appearance of the machine as a whole has been formed, cooperation is being built, "he said, adding that the open architecture will allow the machine to be adapted to a specific customer.

On November 9, a prototype of the Russian Checkmate was delivered to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on an An-124 Ruslan transport aircraft. It was reported that the aircraft will be demonstrated abroad for the first time at the Dubai Airshow.

The prototype of the Checkmate light fighter was unveiled at the 2021 International Aviation and Space Salon (MAKS-2021) in July. Chemezov then said that the cost of the plane would be from $ 25 to $ 30 million. According to him, the plane will be able to carry more than seven tons of weapons.

Delivery of the first aircraft should take place in 2024. Third customer of the model, the European country’s Air Force ordered two airlifters

Embraer began the assembly of the first KC-390 Millennium for the Hungarian Air Force. The European country is the airlifter’s third customer, after Brazil and Portugal, and has ordered only two aircraft.

According to the airframer, the Critical Design Review (CDR) was recently completed, allowing the structural assembly of the first plane to begin this week.

In the coming weeks, parts of the structural panels and coatings of the main components of the fuselage and semi-wings will be assembled.

The delivery of the first Hungarian KC-390, however, will still take time as it is only scheduled for 2024.

Hungary signed an acquisition agreement with Embraer in November 2020. The multi-mission jets will be equipped with an aerial refueling system, hence the KC-390 nomenclature.

Hungary’s KC-390 will also be the world’s first with an Intensive Care Unit in its configuration, for use in humanitarian missions.

As in the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), Millennium will be able to carry out aerial refueling of Gripen fighters as Hungary has a fleet of the original version.

Embraer is also close to completing the first C-390 of the Portuguese Air Force. FAB operates four aircraft, but the Brazilian government has already decided to reduce the order of 28 units to an undisclosed number.

Despite the initial announcement, the 24 used Dassault Rafale fighter jets deducted from the French Air Force fleet will not be fully replaced.

On January 25, 2021, Greece signed an order for six new and 12 used Rafale F3R fighters for the Hellenic Air Force. The levy of fighter jets from the French Air and Space Force fleet allowed a faster and cheaper procurement for Greece as it faced rising territorial tensions with Turkey.

A month later, the French Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, confirmed the order of 12 Dassault Rafale fighter jets to replace the second-hand aircraft.

On May 28, 2021, Croatia also decided to buy 12 used French F3R Rafale fighter jets to modernize the country’s air force, replacing the antique MiG-21BisD/UMD fighters from the Soviet-era currently in service. This time, however, no new order was placed.

As a consequence, the target to increase the number of Rafale fighters, which are the backbone of the force, to 129 jets by 2025 (from 102 on August 21, 2020) will not be met.

The setback was confirmed by the recently-appointed French Chief of the Defence Staff, General Thierry Burkhard, in a hearing with the French Parliament made available on November 9, 2021.

“As for the figures, in 2025, the target was 129 Rafale, but once the [24] Rafales have been removed and those that will be purchased added, we will end up with 117,” Burkhard told the Defense and Armed Forces Commission.

With 12 fighter jets now missing, the French Air and Space Force risk a capacity gap to carry out its different missions. These range from its deployment in Jordan to assist the coalition against the Islamic State, to the training of foreign pilots. To avoid this situation, the 42 Rafale Marine fighters of the French Naval Aviation could come to the rescue.

“The contribution of the Naval Aviation is taken into account by the Defence Staff, which is holding discussions with the Air and Space Force and the Navy,” Burkhard explained. “The things are clear, the objective being to have the most complete capacities possible and the deficit of the one being filled by the small additional capacity of the other.”

However, already confronted with the physical constraints of a catapult launch and arrested landing, as well as a higher average fleet age than their Air Force counterparts, an intensified employment could threaten the availability of the Rafales Marine.

The Aerospace Forces will receive four fifth-generation Su-57 fighters in December, a source said.

MOSCOW, November 12 - RIA Novosti. The Aerospace Forces ( VKS ) will soon receive new serial fifth-generation fighters, a source in the military-industrial complex told RIA Novosti.

"In December, four production Su-57 fighters are to be transferred to the Russian Aerospace Forces from the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant," he said.

Now at the V.P. Chkalov State Flight Test Center, tests of the first serial Su-57 , which the army received in November last year, are continuing . With the delivery of a new batch, the number of such aircraft in the Armed Forces will reach five.

The Su-57 is a fifth-generation Russian multifunctional fighter developed by Sukhoi. The vehicle is designed to destroy all types of air, ground and surface targets. It has a supersonic cruising flight speed, in-body armament, a radio-absorbing coating, as well as a state-of-the-art complex of onboard equipment.

By the end of 2024, the Aerospace Forces should receive 22 Su-57s; by 2028, their number in the troops is planned to be increased to 76.

The first monument to a fifth-generation fighter was erected in China. A prototype of the J-20 fighter was placed on the territory of the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation training center. This was reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The prototype, which was turned into a monument, was used in the life tests of the fighter. The publication notes that it differs from the production version of the J-20. Also, before being installed on a pedestal, the aircraft was deprived of its internal equipment.

Earlier, The Drive drew attention to satellite images of the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group's airfield in Chengdu. In the photographs, we noticed a new fighter made according to a tailless aerodynamic design. The dimensions of the aircraft were comparable to the serial J-20.

In October , the first pictures of the two-seat version of the J-20 appeared on the network . It was reported that the new aircraft could become the basis for the creation of training modifications and strike versions of the J-20.

In December 2020, Popular Mechanics magazine compared the J-20 fighter to the Russian Su-57. The publication noted that the Chinese aircraft is superior to the domestic one in stealth, but has the worst maneuverability.

F-15EX: Why Buy This 'Old' Fighter Instead of More F-35s?

While China and Russia are steadily increasing their stealth fighter jet fleets, the U.S. Air Force is spending billions to buy the F-15EX, a new version of a very old aircraft.

For the past few years, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter has been at the center of the Pentagon’s attention—and rightly so, considering the program currently costs almost two trillion dollars. But as ink is being spilled on the pros and cons of America’s most advanced 5th generation fighter aircraft, the Air Force is adding the 4th generation F-15EX to its fleet.

F-15EX: A Formidable Air Superiority Jet

The F-15EX is an improved version of the most effective air superiority fighter in the skies today. The older versions of the F-15 have an impressive kill ratio of 104-0, with the Israeli Air Force claiming most of those kills.

For decades now, the F-15 has served as the backbone of the Air Force’s air superiority fleet. The first aircraft entered service back in 1974 but has received several updates over the years, with the most significant the F-15E Strike Eagle version that added an additional seat behind the pilot for a weapon systems officer. As of 2021, the Air Force is operating about 450 F-15s, the last one of which was ordered 20 years ago in 2001.

However, the F-15 kept developing during this time as foreign nations, such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, poured money into its development and continued to buy it. As a result, the new version the Air Force is buying comes with several improvements over the existing ones.

The F-15EX has an updated cockpit system, improved electronic warfare capabilities—designed to make it more survivable in a 5th generation battlespace—data fusion capabilities, better engines that make it the fastest fighter jet in America’s arsenal, plus the ability to pack almost 30,000 lbs of munitions. The aircraft has an operating ceiling of 70,000 feet, can reach speeds of up to 2.5 Mach, and has an effective range of more than 1260 miles.

The Air Force has signed a contract with Boeing for 144 F-15EX aircraft to replace the old F-15C. The decision to purchase the improved version of the F-15 goes contrary to the Air Force’s previous plan to only buy 5th generation stealth aircraft for its future fleet.

Why the F-15EX?

Many people will definitely ask why the Air Force is willing to pay $23 billion for an old, new aircraft when it has the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lighting II stealth fighter jets in its arsenal?

The simplest answer is money. The improved version of an almost 50-years-old aircraft is cheaper than the 5th generation F-35, which currently has a price tag of approximately $1.7 trillion for the whole program, including operations and maintenance. Although the Air Force is spending about $90 million per F-15EX, while an F-35 now costs approximately $80 million per aircraft, the older aircraft will prove more economical on the long term.

For example, Boeing and the Air Force expect the F-15EX to last for 20,000 hours, while an F-35 is expected to fly for about 8,000 hours. So, one could argue that one F-15EX equals about three F-35As in price, though not in capabilities.

One of the great things about the F-15EX is the convenience it brings with it. Using approximately 70 percent of the same parts as the existing versions of the F-15, the new iteration will be very easy to introduce to the Air Force and will require months if not weeks for squadrons flying it to be combat-ready as opposed to years and months if it were a completely new platform. The commonality in parts and operation will also make training and maintenance that much easier.

The Pentagon has repeatedly emphasized that the F-15EX isn’t competing with the F-35. Rather, the two aircraft are intended to complement one another to maximize the effectiveness of both. The F-35 has the stealth and fusion sensor capabilities to remain undetected, observe the battlefield, and feed other aircraft and units with targets and intelligence.

Russian strategic bombers Tu-160M and Tu-95M will be armed with non-nuclear ammunition called "product 506". It is a small, ultra-precise cruise missile capable of hitting targets of almost any complexity from a distance of thousands of kilometers. The author of the development was the Raduga design bureau, which is part of the Tactical Missile Armament Corporation (KTRV), Izvestia writes.

As the military expert Dmitry Boltenkov told the publication, the ammunition is most likely locatedin a high degree of readiness. Perhaps he even passed part of the flight tests.

According to the newspaper, the contracts for "product 506" on the government procurement website refer to the use of "product 37P". The 37th product is a family of small-sized by-pass turbojet engines TRDD-50. According to information from open sources, the turbojet engine-50 is used on the Kh-55 and Kh-101 aircraft missiles. "Product 506" will receive a specially modified engine of this family.

As the chief editor of the Militaryrussia Internet project Dmitry Kornev explained, the peculiarity of this engine is that it runs on a different type of fuel. Instead of conventional aviation kerosene, such devices use a mixture of "Decilin" and "Decilin-M", which gives the weapon new characteristics.

This makes it possible to create compact missiles with a long flight range. At the same time, this makes it possible to understand that the ammunition will be subsonic. Most likely, it used stealth technologies, like on the Kh-101/102, to ensure the surprise of the strike and invulnerability to air defense , '' Kornev emphasized.

Earlier it became known about the development in the Russian Federation of an aircraft long-range hypersonic missile X-95. It can become part of the armament of the modernized Tu-22M3M long-range bomber, the modernized Tu-160M strategic bomber and the Advanced Long-Range Aviation Complex (PAK DA).
