The Air Force has released a final request for proposals for the F-15EX propulsion system, which includes up to 461 engines to be delivered through 2031.

The solicitation covers F-15EX production lots 2 through 9 and comes after the service awarded General Electric Aviation -- which supplies the F110 engine for the F-15QA -- a sole-source contract for the first production lot. The Air Force had intended to use the same strategy for later lots, but in the spring, after Pratt & Whitney protested the sole-source decision, the service announced it would instead open competition. Pratt & Whitney, now part of Raytheon, is expected to bid its F100 engine.

A proposed delivery schedule included in the RFP indicates the service expects lots 2 and 3 to include 24 engines, increasing to 28 in Lot 3 and 38 in lots 5 and 6. Quantities would peak in lots 7 and 8 with 48 engines each and then conclude in Lot 9 with 24 engines.

Meanwhile, the Boeing-built F-15EX took its first test flight Feb. 2. The first two aircraft are expected to be delivered this year.
