China and Pakistan signed a contract to supply Islamabad with two Type-054A / P class frigates in 2017. A year later, the parties entered into an additional agreement for the production of another pair of such ships.

The first frigate was launched in August 2020, and the second in January 2021. As for the third, it was laid down in May 2021. The delivery of the first pair of ships is expected by the end of this year.
According to the Pakistani Navy, the Type-054A / P frigates are multipurpose ships equipped with modern means to combat air, surface and submarine threats. "They will become the most technologically advanced platforms of the Pakistani Navy, which will strengthen our ability to meet future challenges and maintain peace, stability and balance of power in the Indian Ocean region," said the Navy officials.
In addition to frigates from China, Pakistan also expects the delivery of new corvettes from Turkey and patrol ships from the Netherlands.
