The Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia is planning
to float a request for proposal (RFP) for purchasing fighter aircraft.
Croatia wishes to obtain the fighter aircraft from five
countries, including Sweden, the US, South Korea, Israel, and Greece.
The RFP involves the Swedish Gripen JAS-39, the US F-16,
South Korean FA-50, Israeli F-16, and Greece F-16 fighter jets.
During an official visit to the US, Croatian Deputy Prime
Minister and Defence Minister Damir Krsticevic said: “I informed Secretary Mattis
on our prospective decision to procure new fighter aircraft. It is my duty as
Defence Minister to restore the capability of fighter aircraft.
“Our talks with the US Secretary convinced us we have his
understanding and support.”
The proposals will be scrutinised based on the aircraft
characteristics and capabilities as well as on three key parameters that
include bilateral agreement, price, and business and economy cooperation deal,
the ministry stated.
The criteria will be the overall price of the package and
the payment modalities, according to the statement.
Considering the complexity and demanding nature of the
project, the Ministry of Defence staff analysed the experiences of other Nato
nations faced with the need of replacement or modernisation of the combat
component, namely Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and
Slovakia.
Croatia expects to take delivery of the first aircraft by
the end of 2020.
