New Delhi, February 1. India expects to begin deliveries of 12 Su-30MKI fighters and 21 MiG-29 fighters by the end of the year if a contract with Russia is signed, Ambassador Bala Venkatesh Varma said.

“Negotiations are underway. As soon as both parties approve the price and specifications, we will sign the contract. I think this will happen soon. We expect that the deliveries, if the contract is signed, can begin this year, "Izvestia newspaper quotes the diplomat .

The ambassador specified that the technical details of the agreement are being discussed.

Earlier, the media reported that India plans to purchase 12 Su-30MKI fighters and 21 MiG-29 light fighters from Russia. As a result of the purchase, the number of MiG-29s in the Indian Air Force will increase to 59, Su-30MKI - up to 284 units.

Simultaneously with the purchase of fighters from Russia, India plans to modernize the combat vehicles already in service. They will be equipped with the latest electronic warfare equipment. In addition, the Indian Su-30MKI will be armed with supersonic missiles of the Russian-Indian development "Brahmos".

Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force Rakesh Bhadoria, during a speech on the results of the joint exercises of the pilots of the Indian and French armies "Desert Knight 2021", said that specialists in the country are actively working on a fifth generation fighter project. At the same time, he acknowledged that New Delhi began developing such a technique with some delay.
