Russia's Military Industrial Company (VPK) has unveiled
the BTR-87 armoured personnel carrier (APC) at the Army-2017 international
military-technical exhibition, outside Moscow.
The vehicle on display features a frontally mounted
powerpack, with the troop compartment located in the rear. The APC is based on
the chassis of the BTR-82A APC, also developed by VPK.
The BTR-87 is designed to transport and support motor
riflemen (motorised infantry) on the battlefield. The vehicle's armament suite
can engage soft-skin targets, armoured vehicles, small surface combatants, and
soldiers. Its ballistic armour protects the combat crew against small arms and
shell splinters. The APC is additionally equipped with a nuclear, biological,
and chemical protection system.

BTR-87 is designed by MIC with assemblies and units of
BTR-82A APC.
The vehicle was developed in 2015, and for the first time
it was publicly demonstrated at the International Military-Technical Forum
"Army-2017".
The specifications of the BTR-87 is full analog of the
BTR-82A. The differences is in the rear ramp, which simplifies the landing of
troops. To enable placement of the rear exit, the vehicle layout has changed -
the engine is placed in front of the hull.

As for the combat module, it is reported that several
options are possible. Including uninhabited. All of them are equipped with
perfect fire control systems with thermal imaging channels and are armed with a
30-mm cannon with a twin machine gun. The installation of anti-tank complexes
"Cornet", as well as containers with flamethrowers "Shmel"
is foreseen.
