Argentina’s programme to equip its IA-58 Pucará aircraft
with new Pratt & Whitney PT-6A-62 engines is finished, although it has not
officially been terminated, according to sources in the Argentine Air Force and
state-run Fábrica Argentina de Aviones (FAdeA), the company leading the
project.
A prototype with the new engines flew in 2015 and 2016, but
the Argentine Air Force was not happy with the performance or with the engine
selected, and the cost to modify the aircraft was considered too expensive.
Since the air force lacked interest, FAdeA decided to halt testing.
The prototype at the factory was cannibalised and now has
no ejection seats and some instruments were removed.
