The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a possible foreign military sale (FMS) of RGM-84L Harpoon Block II surface launched missiles, Block II rolling airframe missile (RAM) tactical missiles and MK 54 Mod 0 lightweight torpedoes to Mexico.

The potential FMS has an estimated value of $98.4m and was requested by the Government of Mexico.

It has since been approved by the US State Department.

The potential sale package covers six RGM-84L Harpoon Block II surface-launched missiles, 23 Block II RAM tactical missiles and six MK 54 Mod 0 lightweight torpedoes.

The deal also includes the possible delivery of eight MK 825 Mod 0 RAM guided missile round packs (GMRP) tri-pack shipping and storage containers, RAM Block 2 MK 44 Mod 4 GMRP and two MK 32 surface vessel torpedo tubes (SVTT) triple tube launchers.

Additional items outlined in the deal include 250 rounds of AA98 25mm high-explosive and semi-armour piercing ammunition, 750 rounds of A976 25mm target practice and tracer ammunition, 480 rounds of BA22 57mm high-explosive programmable fuse ammunition and 960 rounds of BA23 57mm practice ammunition, among others.

Mexico intends to use the ship-based technologies to enhance the country’s maritime capabilities and align its systems with existing regional navies.

Furthermore, the defence articles and services will help the nation upgrade its armed forces and expand its existing naval and maritime support of national security requirements, as well as its efforts to combat criminal organisations.

The weapon systems are expected to be deployed on the Mexican Navy’s Sigma 10514-class vessel in order to improve its ability to effectively defend critical sea lanes.
