Boeing has contracted its partner, Saab, to begin the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase of the US Air Force (USAF's) advanced pilot training programme, known as T-X.
The Swedish manufacturer announced on 19 October that it has received USD117.6 million through to 2022 for EMD development of the BTX aircraft it has designed with Boeing, which will serve as prime contractor for the USAF programme to replace its Northrop T-38 Talon platforms with as many as 350 new aircraft.
On 27 September Boeing was awarded an initial USD813 million deal for the EMD part of the USD9.2 billion T-X programme. The contract for Saab comes a day after the window for protests by the competing teams closed, with no protests being filed.
The clean-sheet BTX is a twin-seat single-engined platform that features a 'glass' cockpit, modelled to resemble that of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), and an open systems architecture. It incorporates elements from both the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the Saab Gripen combat aircraft. There are currently two aircraft (BTX1 and BTX2) flying out of St Louis, Missouri, where Boeing will manufacture all future T-X aircraft.
