A unique aviation division has appeared in the Russian Aerospace Force. Her planes will be able not only to intercept aircraft, drones and cruise missiles of the enemy, but also to destroy ground targets with the latest X-47 Dagger hypersonic missiles. Part of the 21st mixed air division deployed in the Perm and Krasnoyarsk Territories and the Chelyabinsk region. It consisted of the shelves of the supersonic high-altitude interceptors MiG-31, as well as the multifunctional front-line bombers Su-34. "Thirty first" are able to destroy the air of the enemy, to suppress air defense and strike with hypersonic "Daggers." And the Su-34 are universal combat vehicles that are capable of conducting air combat and “knock out” even well-protected ground targets with high-precision bombs and missiles.

The 21st mixed aviation division, which is deployed in the Central Military District, is by far the most powerful air force in the Armed Forces, the Defense Ministry told Izvestia. The tasks of the division, which is organizationally part of the 14th Army of the VKS, include covering the airspace of Russia in the southern and southeastern directions, but if necessary, its planes can be quickly transferred to other regions.

The main forces included in the newly formed air division are two regiments, whose fleet consists of high-altitude all-weather MiG-31BM interceptor fighters. They are based in Perm and the city of Kansk, Krasnoyarsk Territory. There are no other similar regiments in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - only separate squadrons of the MiG-31BM that are part of other units.

The third regiment of the 21st division is located in the village of Shagol near Chelyabinsk, its fleet consists of Su-34 multipurpose fighter-bombers.

Thanks to this combination of equipment, the division will be able to close Russian airspace several thousand kilometers away with an impenetrable shield. At the same time, the connection not only keeps the airspace under control, but, if necessary, can strike ground objects, including high-precision systems.

Su-34 entered service with the VKS in 2014. These front-line bombers can hit both ground and air targets at any time of the day, the range of the Su-34 is over 2 thousand km. The main weapons of bombers are high-precision missiles and bombs. During the operation in Syria, the “thirty-fourths” destroyed several thousand militant objects with precise blows.

The MiG-31 is a supersonic all-weather long-range interceptor fighter developed in the Soviet Union. However, experts called it an unsurpassed machine in its class. Several MiG-31s can control the airspace up to 900 km. And the range of this fighter is 2 thousand km. Currently, the interceptor continues to serve - in a modernized version of the MiG-31BM. The modified aircraft can carry the latest X-47 Dagger hypersonic missiles. These products can hit land and sea targets within a radius of 2 thousand km.

Honored Test Pilot, Hero of Russia, Colonel Igor Malikov, who previously himself piloted the MiG-31, described the aircraft as "C-400, only in the air."

- This is a very serious car, its peculiarity is that it covers the front at a very large width. I would not fly where the MiG-31 flies, the pilot told Izvestia.

The wide front and long range could be the reason why the shelves on these aircraft are located in the Urals and in Siberia - in these regions it is necessary to cover a very large space along the border. As the former commander of the 4th army of the Air Force and Air Defense, Lieutenant General Valery Gorbenko, after upgrading the Su-34 and MiG-31 are universal vehicles capable of carrying means of destruction of ground targets and at the same time cover themselves from enemy aircraft. And if necessary, these units can be used in the interests not only of the front, but also of the high command, the general added.

Earlier, Izvestia reported that by the end of 2018, the Steppe airfield would be commissioned in Transbaikalia, which will become the permanent home base of the assault air regiment. If necessary, this airfield, having one of the longest runways in the world, will be able to receive all types of aircraft. It is planned that the Steppe will become an essential element of the security system in the Asia-Pacific region.
