The Luftwaffe has placed its first A400M in intensive care aeromedical evacuation (ICAE) configuration on 12-hour standby starting on 1 August.
The aircraft was flown from its home base of Wünsdorf to Berlin-Tegel on 31 July to be presented to the Secretary of State for Armaments in the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Benedikt Zimmer, who said the protection and treatment of German soldiers is a top priority for the Bundeswehr and therefore for defence spending. He also identified medical evacuation (medevac) as a “rare resource in the multinational framework” – that is, a NATO and EU capability gap – which the Bundeswehr would contribute to filling.
A total of four ICAE kits will be procured for the A400M, according to the German MoD. Up to six patients can be treated by the 11-strong medical team on board the A400M ICAE aircraft, providing two with intensive care, two with intermediate care, and two with lower priority care.
