The guided-missile destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) is getting ready to conduct navigational certifications and crew qualifications, the US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) told Jane’s .

The ship is getting ready to get under way for the certifications and qualifications after having completed sea trials in September and in support of its ongoing combat availability and combat test, NAVSEA said.

Zumwalt , the first of the three-ship class, has been on the US West Coast for about a year, being tested and refitted for a new sea-attack role. The destroyers were initially envisioned for land-attack missions, but the US Navy reconsidered the ship’s role when issues arose in the acquisition of ammunition for its BAE MK 51 Systems Advanced Gun System and 155 mm guns.
