The Turkish Army’s Anti-Tank Vehicle (ATV) programme is progressing with the debut of the PARS 4x4 prototype platform ahead of qualification trials with the service.

Domestic manufacturer FNSS, the prime contractor for the ATV programme, unveiled the prototype at this year's Eurosatory 2018 in Paris.

The PARS 4x4 ATV began verification tests in May and is expected to begin qualification tests shortly, with the project scheduled to be completed in 2021.

The company’s Anti-Tank Remote Controlled Turret (ARCT) will act as the 4x4’s primary weapon system, firing two anti-tank guided missiles and supported by a 7.62mm machine gun.

The turret system is capable of firing Kornet and Mizrak missiles and recently performed long-range qualification firing tests from the tracked ATV variant. The ARCT can also be configured to enable the integration of alternative anti-tank missiles.

Equipped with a digital gun turret drive system, functions such as charging, firing, electrical extraction of empty cartridges can be carried out automatically from within the vehicle.

While the vehicle has been designed to meet Turkish specifications, Nail Kurt, FNSS CEO, is confident that the platform has significant export potential.

‘The vehicle, I think, has a lot of potential for exports,’ he said during a press briefing at the event.

‘There is a lot of interest from the Middle East… with serious interest from at least two potential customers in the region.’

The Turkish ATV programme will see the delivery of 260 vehicles that include a tracked KAPLAN-ATV model and 76 wheeled PARS ATV 4x4 platform. First deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2019, with all deliveries completed by 2021.

The tracked ATV prototype will be officially unveiled at IDEF 2019.

For the Turkish Army the vehicle has been configured for weapon carrying missions, however according to Kurt the 4x4 would be well suited for a range of roles including reconnaissance missions.

By placing the cooling grate and exhaust on the upper body, the 4x4 offers amphibious capabilities and a maximum speed of 110 km/h. The vehicle’s performance is further enhanced by an axle and steering system designed to deliver greater agility and performance over rough terrain.

The rear positioning of the battery pack also reduces the vehicle’s thermal signature and provides the driver with a wide field of vision, supplemented with an integrated camera system for forward and rear situational awareness.
